A hero of our days (original title: Un eroe dei nostri tempi ) is an Italian comedy film in black and white from 1955 by Mario Monicelli . He also wrote the script. The main roles are cast with Alberto Sordi , Franca Valeri , Giovanna Ralli and Tina Pica . In Germany, the work could be seen for the first time on September 14, 1969 in the ARD program .

action

Alberto Menichetti lives with an aunt in a small apartment in Italy in the 1950s. Alberto is a man who never takes a risk - he still wears a wool sweater in May. He lugs his alibis around in his pocket diary, and although he casts fiery looks at the pretty hairdresser Marcella, he doesn't dare to go home with her because he thinks she is still a minor. But despite all his pathological caution, Alberto taps into all the faux pas: with his boss, the widow De Ritis, who desires him, he gets into a little fuss in the office and then has to fear being fired; the police suspect him of being a bomber, and Marcella's close friend Fernando wants to beat him up because he sees him as a rival (and the father of Marcella's unborn child).

When a bomb really does go off at an election meeting, Alberto finds himself in no time at the police station, surrounded by a circle of angry friends and acquaintances and with trembling knees. In the end, the boastful "diplomatic widow" De Ritis has to admit that her husband was not an ambassador, but only held a subordinate position in the embassy.

criticism

The Evangelische Film-Beobachter sums up his criticism as follows: “The film, for long stretches just non-binding fun that stays on the surface, thrives on Alberto Sordi's performance in the role of a boom.” The lexicon of international film comes to one similar judgment. It notes succinctly that the film was well played in the main role, but ultimately a superficial comedy.
