The Italian film comedy Raped in Chains was made in 1961. Your TV title The Ride on the Tiger is a literal translation of the original title A cavallo della tigre . Mario Adorf and Gian Maria Volonté play alongside the main actor Nino Manfredi . Director Luigi Comencini implemented the project immediately after his popular war comedy The Way Back , and as with this one, he wrote the script for this Commedia all'italiana again with the writing duo Age & Scarpelli .

Because the prosperity has passed his family by, the harmless truck driver Giacinto takes money from the company. He pretends to have been the victim of a robbery, but his amateurish behavior puts him behind bars for two years. In jail he meets three hardened criminals who take advantage of his good-naturedness and compel him to provide support for their planned escape.
By chance, Giacinto is transferred to her cell, of all places, to Mario “the buffalo”, the genteel, no less brutal Papaleo and the older inmate “the rat”. The three determine that he has to come with them as a confidante. The breakout succeeds, whereby the prison administration gets the impression that Giacinto is the head of the gang who arranged everything. Giacinto learns from the newspaper that he and Mario's capture each have a million lire suspended. The woman can be helped, he tells himself, and goes back to Mario. The next morning, the notified police lead the two escaped away, while Giacinto's wife with her new partner and their children are facing a prosperous life.
Background and reception
Chained Rape is a bitter and desperate comedy. Your protagonist Giacinto is a "poor devil who is happier in prison than in freedom", an eternal loser whose wife lives with another man, whose children have become estranged from him and who in the end has to betray who his friend is has become. With his coup, Giacinto wants to integrate himself into society, but as a result he is even more expelled by it.
At the box office, the production was a failure. Co-writer Age explained it this way: "We put a certain cruelty, a certain cynicism in a comic film, which did not win the sympathy of the audience." Comencini also suspected the cause in the malice; the rejection by the audience made it difficult for him to realize further film projects. However, he spoke out against a sacrificial attitude, which assumes that the audience did not understand the work.

In 2002, directed by Carlo Mazzacurati, a remake was made with the same title, A cavallo della tigre .
