Umiliani started to study law and earned some money arranging and publishing jazz tracks. Supported by Armando Trovajoli , he was able to publish his first album ( Dixieland in Naples ) in 1950 . Thereupon he got (mostly not mentioned) orders for jazzy songs in several films until Mario Monicelli got him the first official credit for I soliti ignoti .

Like many of his colleagues, Umiliani composed mostly film music for exploitation films in the 1960s and 1970s , especially for spaghetti westerns , agent films , Giallo and sex films . Although he never became as famous as his colleagues Ennio Morricone or Riz Ortolani , his style-forming contribution to the development of the typically European jazzy soundtrack of the 60s and 70s should not be underestimated.

In the wake of the retro wave in new American productions, Umiliani's sound was rediscovered, so Life and Love in LA , Kill Bill or Ocean's 12 contain an old song of his.

Piero Umiliani has composed songs or the entire soundtrack for around 150 films .
