The hour of tough men (original title: Ercole, Sansone Maciste e Ursus gli invincibili ) is a parodic adventure film with mythological motifs, which Giorgio Capitani directed in 1964. It was first seen in the German-speaking area on May 7, 1965. Alternative title is Triumph der Gianten .

action

In order to win the hand of the beautiful Omfale of Lydia , whose life he saved, Hercules has to fight the strongest man in the world after a repeatedly manipulated oracle. Omfale's mother Nemea, who uses Hercules' infatuation for her own interests, sends an embassy to Samson, who accepts the challenge; however, his wife Dalila jealously cuts his hair, which takes away his strength. The Lydian ambassadors, who do not understand why Samson is weak, then take the coarse Ursus and his conqueror, the noble Maciste, with them to Lydia.

When Hercules defeats Samson without any problems, Inor, the son of the chief of the mountain peoples who are at war with Lydia, kidnaps Omfale with their consent; they are really in love, which his father absolutely does not like. Nemea tells Hercules about the kidnapping, whereupon he defeats the mountain tribes, but also learns of Omfale's love. A new attempt to manipulate the oracle leads to a fight between the four strong men, in which even the temple threatens to be destroyed, until the father of the gods Zeus intervenes and settles all ambiguities.

criticism

"If you can't think of a story, you just make a virtue out of necessity and parody your own inability," note Ronald M. Hahn and Norbert Stresau . The lexicon of international films considers the film to be an “undemanding, turbulent, sometimes all too loud parody of the numerous 'muscle and sandal films', predominantly of Italian origin”. Massimo Bertarelli even said: “If Capitani wanted to make a parody, that would also explain the presence of the ringmaster Orfei. Then the film would even be worth an Oscar. "The Protestant film observer is full of praise :" Lively and spectacularly colossal film, which is completely bloodless and can be recommended from the age of 12 because of its funny, parodic ideas. "

Remarks

The gross profit in Italy was 120 million lire .
