Veiko Õunpuu

Veiko Õunpuu (born March 16, 1972 on the island of Saaremaa ) is an Estonian film director.

Life

Veiko Õunpuu graduated from the private Estonian Business School in 1996 in business management. Until 1999 he studied literary theory and semiotics at the Estonian Humanitarian Institute . He then worked in the advertising industry. In 2000, Õunpuu founded the film production company Suhkur Film . Since 2005 he has worked as a director for the production company Kuukulgur Film .

In February 2010, Õunpuu made his debut as a theater director in Tallinn with Rainer Werner Fassbinder's Der Müll, die Stadt und der Tod .

Õunpuu celebrated successes with his three major feature films so far. His first film Tühirand (2006) was voted best Estonian film of the year. His second film, Sügisball , won the “Horizon Award” at the Venice International Film Festival . The third feature film, Püha Tõnu kiusamine, is Estonia's entry in the “ Best Foreign Language Film ” category at the 2011 Academy Awards .

Õunpuu's films are characterized by artistic slowness and eccentric figures.
