Exploitation is the English word for " exploitation ", " utilization " and "utilization". “ Exploitation film ” is used in German and English as a technical term for the film genre of the same name .

Concept history

A verb belonging to the German foreign word, which was also used as a noun, is "exploitieren", which is etymologically derived primarily from the French "exploiter". "Exploiteur" is a paraphrase for an exploiter, but no longer plays a role in today's German usage. The term is known from the French socialist Saint-Amand Bazard (1791–1832) with his comment on the society Exploitation de l'homme par l'homme (German: exploitation of one by the other ). The term “exploiter” can be found among other things among other socialist theorists of the 19th century as a synonym for “ capitalist ”. The manifesto of the communist party by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels speaks of “exploitation of the world market” and the “exploitation of one individual by the other”, which should be repealed.

In English and German, "exploitation" is now also used as a technical term in media theory to describe the secondary exploitation of a successful topic in film, book, comic, etc. While in the early days of the sound film commercial exploitation of documentaries, problem films or even religious films were subsumed under this term, at the beginning of the 1930s the term narrowed to low-budget films , in which primarily violence, extreme sexual acts and sensitive Subjects of all kinds are presented.
