Alfredo Bini (born December 12, 1926 in Livorno , † October 16, 2010 in Tarquinia ) was an Italian film producer . He is best known as the producer of numerous films by Pier Paolo Pasolini .

Life

Alfredo Bini came to Rome in 1945, through theater and extras in the Cinecittà Studios he came to film. There he worked mainly as a production assistant in the 1950s. In 1960 he founded the production company Film 5 with the screenwriters Furio Scarpelli and Agenore Incrocci and the directors Mario Monicelli and Luigi Comencini . However, the company dissolved again after the first film A cavallo della tigre .

In 1960, Bini founded his own production company, Arco Film . Through Mauro Bolognini , the director of his first production Il bell'Antonio , he met Pier Paolo Pasolini , whose films he produced from Accattone (1961) to Edipo re (1967). Federico Fellini had withdrawn the initially promised production of Pasolini's debut film Accattone by his production company Federiz after viewing the first material. Bolognini, who had seen the script at Pasolini by chance, was enthusiastic about it and brought the film to Bini. Accattone became a huge hit and received widespread public attention, but like all of Pasolini's films that were to follow, it was also highly controversial. Bini, like his other directors, nevertheless gave Pasolini a completely free hand with all films, which brought Arco Film into financial distress in 1963 through the trial of La ricotta (an episode in RoGoPaG ). In rhymes sung opening credits to The Hawks and the Sparrows ( Uccellacci e uccellini , 1966) alludes to the fact:

“With Uccelacci e uccellini,
director Pier Paolo Pasolini is endangering his reputation.
And producer Alfredo Bini risked his fortune. "

- opening credits of "Big Birds, Little Birds"

In 1969 Bini fought with Fellini for the film rights to the material of the ancient novel Satyricon and won the process; both Bini and Fellini subsequently brought out a film: Binis Satyricon , directed by Gian Luigi Polidoro and Fellini's Satyricon . However, Bini's quickly wacky version was not well received by the critics and had to contend with censorship (accusation of profanity). Bini defended the film in a long essay, Appunti per chi ha il dovere civile, professionale e politico di different il cinema italiano . After a good 20 films, Bini dissolved Arco Film in 1970.

Bini remained active in the film business with new companies, he founded Finarco (1969–1975), Gericho Sound (1969–1975) and Nuova Linea Cinematografica (1970–1974), but no longer developed an independent profile with these companies and co-produced many Movies. He also increasingly produced for the television and video market.

In 1987, Bini headed the film market of the Milan Fair (MIDEF) for three years, successfully restructured it and prepared it for the modern development of the commercial markets of film and television distribution .

The Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia , the foundation of the National Film School and Cinematheque of Italy, appointed Bini as a successor to Lina Wertmüller as a member of the commission (Commissario straordinario) for the years 1994–1995 .

Alfredo Bini was married to actress Rosanna Schiaffino from 1963 to 1980 , who also played in many of his productions. The two have a daughter, Annabella, who was born in 1969.
