In 1797 Napoleon Bonaparte prepares to attack his archenemy England in Egypt . Meanwhile succeeds Captain Peyrol, with his French brig Marigalante before Toulon crossing English Corvette Amelia of Admiral Nelson to outwit and intact to enter the port. Peyrol, who is seeing his home again for the first time in forty years, hands the Marigalante over to the port commanders. The old corsair wants to turn his back on the lake forever and spend a quiet retirement with his acquired fortune. But Commissioner Dussard accuses him of being a former deserter of the royal fleet and tries to gain possession of Peyrol's doubloons in this way .

The shrewd Peyrol escapes, however, and finds refuge on a remote beach in the area where he was once born. There he finds only a few people in an old homestead - including a strange girl named Arlette, her aunt Caterina, the shy cripple Michel and Scevola, a sadistic servant. The kind Caterina welcomes the stranger in a benevolent manner, also in the hope that he can stay with them and find a new home there. However, Peyrol soon becomes plagued by his restlessness. With the help of the lame Michel, he tries to make the wreck of an old sailing boat seaworthy again. Meanwhile, Arlette's childlike affection thaws his hard heart. He is convinced that her strange behavior, including her anxiety, stems from a traumatic experience in her childhood when her parents were brutally murdered. When the irascible Scevola assaults Arlette and threatens to set the homestead on fire, Peyrol steps in just in time and has no mercy on the angry man , who also turns out to be the murderer of Arlette's parents. After Scevola's death, Arlette's emotional state began to steadily improve.

One day the young officer Real turns up on the estate, who believes he has found exactly the right man in Peyrol for a dangerous mission. A fake secret message is said to be leaked to Admiral Nelson, which will enable the French fleet to sail unhindered to Egypt. Peyrol initially refuses. But when he realizes that Arlette loves the young officer, he sets out to sacrifice himself and sails with the embassy towards the English on his repaired boat. It almost seems as if he wants to break through the blockade of the British with their bullets, which are now flying wildly around. Knowing that he will die, he binds himself to the steering wheel, where he is finally found dead with the embassy. In the subsequent naval battle near Abukir , Napoleon's naval fleet is defeated by the British, but the Corsican succeeds in expanding his power.

I come from the end of the world is an adaptation of the novel The Master of Ballantrae ( The Rover , 1923), the last full work of the Polish writer Joseph Conrad. Leading actors Anthony Quinn and Rita Hayworth appeared together in Rouben Mamoulian's bullfighting drama King of the Toreros ( Blood and Sand ) in 1941 . While the Italian actors in I come from the end of the world presented their dialogues in their mother tongue during the shoot, Anthony Quinn and Rita Hayworth spoke their lines of dialogue in English , which both dubbed in Italian in post-production .

In Germany, the film was first shown in cinemas on January 12, 1968. In 2007 and 2009 the film was released on DVD.

Reviews

"Well-done staged film adaptation of a novel that does not succeed in making the human conflicts credible so that it remains at the level of adventure history," said the lexicon of international films . William Thomaier wrote in Films in Review at the time that the plot "falls flat" after a promising beginning [...] and "the viewer's interest [...] falls by the wayside ". The course of the story is "never clear" and the pace "tiring". The film remains true to Conrad ", but probably too much, since the weakness of the book is largely responsible for the fatigue of the film". However, the end is "very good".
