The Degenerate is an Italian film that was made around Federico Fellini's Satyricon and originally bears the same title as his film. Directed by Gian Luigi Polidoro ; German premiere was on March 17, 1972.

content

The film essentially follows the template by Titus Petronius Arbiter , but emphasizes the "obscene" passages, which is underlined in the German version by a "sordid dialogue [...], which is supposed to trigger cheerfulness":

Two young friends, Encolpius and Ascyltus, travel from Rome to the villa of their uncle Anneus Mela. On this journey, on the run from the customs authorities, they first arrive in a cave where the corrupt Tryphena holds ceremonies in honor of the god Priapus; both help until their husband arrives. After reaching Baia, where the uncle lives, Encolpius is considered to be the master of the house, as Anneus is wanted by Nero as a suspect in the murder plot against his wife. Since soldiers of the emperor are at the door, both have to flee again, this time with the young Gitone who is housed there. Encolpius is able to seduce the young man into cohabitation and thus wins the love contest with Ascyltus for Gitone. They are greeted with the poet Eumolpus at a great dinner by the freed Trimalchius, a vulgar and stupid man who tries to impress his guests with the display of his wealth and profanity. After leaving the festival, the two friends compete for young Circe but are unable to satisfy her. They are eventually captured because of the Priapic cave celebration; Askyltus is crucified, Encolpius and his lover Gitone are able to evade emasculation and flee by ship. This capsizes during a storm; Encolpius is the only survivor.

criticism

"The moral novel of the ancient Roman writer Petronius," Satyricon ", in an elaborate, stupid, shoddy-crude film adaptation."

Others

  • Producer Alfredo Bini , who claimed to have had claims to the film since 1962 and enforced them against a lawsuit by Fellini producer Alberto Grimaldi , hired some actors who were divorced with Fellini. Nevertheless, the hastily produced film failed to achieve the desired success: panned by criticism , it was withdrawn from circulation as early as 1970 for allegedly excessive obscenity. It did not appear in Germany until 1972. The distribution title is reminiscent of the international title of Fellini's film: Satyricon - The Degenerates .
