Ugo Tognazzi (born March 23, 1922 in Cremona , Lombardy , † October 27, 1990 in Rome ) was an Italian actor , director , writer and comedian .

Ugo Tognazzi spent his youth in different places in Italy, as his father was an agent for an insurance company and traveled a lot around the country. After returning to his hometown of Cremona in 1936, he worked in a salami factory. He was called up during World War II and returned to his homeland in September 1943 after the Cassibile armistice . He had a penchant for stage events since his youth, and even during the war years he performed plays for the soldiers in his troupe. In 1945 he moved to Milan , where he was hired by Wanda Osiris ' theater company. A few years later, he founded his own company that performed musicals and revues.

Tognazzi was best known in Germany for his roles in The Big Feast and A Cage Full of Fools . In addition to his acting - in 1981 he won the award for best actor at the Cannes Film Festival , received three times the David di Donatello and four times the Nastro d'Argento - he enjoyed a high reputation in Italy as a gourmet and chef.

Ugo Tognazzi died of a cerebral haemorrhage at the age of 68 . He was buried in the Cimitero Monumentale of Velletri , Lazio region .

Tognazzi was married to Franca Bettoja . His sons Ricky (* 1955) and Gianmarco (* 1967) are film actors, the former also working as a director. His daughter Maria Sole Tognazzi (* 1971) is a film director. He is the father of the Norwegian film director and producer Thomas Robsahm (* 1964).
