Wolfsblut is an Italian-French-Spanish feature film by the production company Distribuzione Titanus from 1973 based on the story White Fang by Jack London . The film takes place at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century in northwestern Canada and contains elements of adventure and animal films . It revolves around motifs of gold digging based on the Klondike gold rush .

action

The Indian Charlie and his underage son Mitsah get into the hands of a feral German shepherd , whom they call Wolfsblut and with whom Mitsah becomes friends against the will of his father, who only sees him as the predator. Shortly afterwards, the two met their friend Kurt Janssen, accompanied by the writer Jason Scott, on their way to the gold rush town of Dawson .

A little later, Mitsah breaks into ice fishing . Wolfsblut alarms Charlie and thereby saves Mitsah's life. But he remains bedridden and his father, accompanied by Wolfsblut, takes him on a sled and in a canoe to Dawson, where he hopes for medical help. There he is confronted with the unscrupulous profiteer Beauty Smith and his gang. Because he does not want to cede the dog to this, he is stabbed by a henchman of Smith.

Meanwhile, Mitsah is recovering in the city's infirmary, which is being looked after by Sister Evangelina, who has come specially for this purpose. The pastor of the ward, Father Oatley, and Janssen and Scott, who have since arrived, oppose Smith, whom they accuse of improper business practices. As a witness to the murder, Oatley had previously remained silent out of fear. When it becomes known that gold has been found in another area, Smith and his team initially keep this news a secret, fearing that Dawson will bleed out and their business will end. This news is eventually spread by Oatley in his desperation after his daughter is killed in a scuffle with Smith and one of his henchmen.

Remarks

The film shows landscape shots and contains scenes with intra- and extra-specific aggression between animals. The opening scene shows the predatory behavior of wolves to which a caribou falls victim. A rival fight between two dogs and a fight between the dog Wolfsblut and a brown bear are also shown, each using teeth and claws.

The film song Oh Johnny is interpreted by the actress Carole André.

criticism

The lexicon of international films called the production an "elaborate adventure film" that stays pale "when it comes to capturing the relationship between the laws of civilization and the forces of nature."
