Wolf's Blood (novel)
Wolfsblut ( English original title White Fang ) is a 1906 novel by the American writer Jack London , which is set around 1900 in North America and California.
The novel varies the theme of London's book Call of the Wild , in which a domesticated dog reverts to a wild animal. This narrative is reversed in wolf's blood : Here a wild animal is transformed into a civilized being that is used to people and society.
action
The novel begins with a dramatic encounter between hungry wolves and people with sled dogs. There is a terrible famine and the pack of wolves is chasing people and their dogs for food. Wolfsblut's mother Kische plays an important role in this; because she is only half a wolf. During this time she meets Wolfsblut's father, a thoroughbred wolf.
In the next part of the novel, Wolfsblut's first months of life are told: how he and his mother come to an Indian camp and spend his youth there. He is soon separated from his mother and argues a lot with the other Indian dogs. For the Indians, Wolfsblut turns out to be a particularly good sled dog. He is later used as a lead dog and is hated by the other dogs because he receives special treatment. He has to prove his strength to the dogs every day after removing the harness.
Wolfs blood is then sold for a few bottles of whiskey to a man who fights dog and is cruel. He fights dogs and a female lynx that has just been caught. In his last fight with a bulldog, which for him ends almost fatally, Weedon Scott finally saves him. Scott is from San Francisco, California. He is a mining expert and is on friendly terms with the authorities. That's why nobody intervenes when he saves wolf blood. He buys the dog for $ 150. Scott nurses the battered animal that is slowly trusting him back to health. Wolfsblut finally sees Scott as his new master and has many adventures with him.
After much deliberation, Scott takes him to California. Here wolf blood has to adapt to life in civilization, which is not so easy for him; but he succeeds. Scott's family and the family dog Collie are initially not thrilled that he is bringing a wolf from the north. That changes slowly, especially when Wolfsblut saves his master after a riding accident.
The family embraces him all the more when Wolfsblut saves them from an escaped convict who was convicted by Scott's father, a former judge, in his final year in office. He almost dies in the process, but is nursed back to health by the family. At the end of the story, he still plays with his cubs, whom he shares with Collie, the Scotts' dog.
