Among the sailors in San Francisco Bay , Joe hopes to fulfill his dream of seafaring and the big wide world. But the captain and the crew who eventually hire him are pirates . He finds his only friend in the cabin boy Frisco Kid, who is the same age.
At his side, Joe experiences exciting adventures in Frisco Bay. Finally they manage to escape from the pirates and start a new life on land.

The book is specially tailored to the adventurous nature of young boys. We know that Jack London describes a bit of his own life here: Like the protagonist Joe Bronson, the American author broke out of a difficult childhood and worked as an oyster pirate in the Bay of San Francisco.
