Never torment a child as a joke (original title: Non si sevizia un paperino , international title: Don't Torture a Duckling ) is an Italian thriller ( Giallo ) by Lucio Fulci from 1972 with Florinda Bolkan , Barbara Bouchet , Tomás Milián , Marc Porel and Irene Papas in the main and supporting roles.

In the southern Italian village of Accendura, three little boys torture animals, threaten the mentally handicapped boy Giuseppe and watch prostitutes doing their trade. When one of the boys is found murdered shortly afterwards, the villagers suspect Giuseppe. Then another child's corpse appears, it is that of Bruno, who also belonged to the trio. The young pastor of the village, Don Alberto Avallone, blesses the boys' bodies.

Soon others come under suspicion, such as the holidaymaker Patrizia, who has traveled from the city, as well as Maciara, who is decried as a witch. She is almost lynched by the mob and admits to having killed the children using voodoo . Then the men, women and children of the village chase her to the cemetery next to the church and trample the poor woman to death in religious intoxication. However, the young journalist Andrea Martelli does not believe in Maciara's guilt and is investigating. Finally the third boy also dies. Now Alberto's mother, Aurelia Avallone, also interferes.

Meanwhile, Don Alberto preaches that sin and depravity are responsible for the death of the boys. At the end of the film it turns out that he himself is the murderer. When he tries to throw his sister, who had recently disappeared, off a cliff, he is caught by Martelli and pushed off the cliff during a fist fight.

Background and publication

Lucio Fulci set his story in the south of Italy, where Catholic faith, deep religiosity and superstition determine the nature of the village people. The backwoodsmen from the south suspect a young woman from the city in the north. There is undoubtedly a proximity to Brunello Rondi's work Il Demonio , created in 1963 , where the protagonist in the center is also considered a witch and is attacked by the village community. This film was even shot in the same locations as Il Demonio at the time .

And the lynching of Maciara ( Florinda Bolkan ) is reminiscent of Marina Vlady's lynching in The Blonde Witch , where the devout mob also acts unleashed in front of a church. Fulci’s deep criticism of the church culminates in the motif of the murderer: the young pastor Alberto ( Marc Porel ) kills the bad boys in order to cleanse them of sin.

As on the occasion of Fulci's film Una lucertola con la pelle di donna from 1971, where he had to answer questions to the court on suspicion of animal cruelty related to an overly realistic scene with a dog, there was also one scene from this film Examination. Fulci had to explain how the scene with Patrizia, played by Barbara Bouchet and trying to seduce an underage boy naked, came about and whether the child really had to face a stark-naked actress.

The film premiered on September 29, 1972 in Italy. It started operating in France on March 22, 1978. It had its video premiere in the USA on May 23, 2000. In Ireland it was presented on October 24, 2003 at the Dublin Horrorthon Film Festival. It was released in Australia on May 5, 2015 on DVD / Blu-ray.

In essence, Quäle never received positive reviews for kidding a child . On Rotten Tomatoes , Tantalizing Never Joking a Child received an average user rating of 78%.

Jacko Kunze gave the film 7.5 points on Moviebreak.de and described it as "disturbing, exciting and far more profound than you might expect from the name Lucio Fulci". He praised the work as a "strong piece of genre cinema, which even after more than 40 years still clearly stands out from the crowd and has lost none of its power."

Robert Firsching wrote on allmovie.com that the film was “one of the more successful films by Lucio Fulci ”. TV Guide was also positive, the film was “surprisingly successful and not exaggerated”.

Haiko's film dictionary certified the film that the dubbing was "quite well done". In the film there are “two scenes that stay in your memory, but the rest is more psychological thriller and drama, and it has to be said at its finest. Fulci succeeds in creating an atmosphere that keeps any poetry out of the village and has a rather disturbing effect on the viewer, especially when the residents resort to lynching and take the law into their own hands without negotiations and only out of sheer suspicion ”.

Christian Ade from filmtipps.at was full of praise for the film and said about the lynch murder that it got “more under the skin” than the one in Fulci's The Beyond . “The minutes of extreme violence in Don't Torture a Duckling [are] so agonizing that you [can] taste the victim's agony right into your living room. That [was] painful. Intensive.
