Malottes
Malottes are sheathing (mostly made of straw ) for glass bottles , the valuable contents of which are to be protected from broken glass.
In Malotten, wine, beer or spirits bottles were mainly wrapped for transport in the first half of the last century . So there is a very high probability that the bottles stayed whole. In addition, the contents of the bottle have kept their temperature in the straw tubes. At that time, Twistringen in Lower Saxony was the stronghold of Malotten production. Because there the soil is ideally suited for the growth of long rye straw . Only this has the necessary stalk strength to be used in this form as packaging material . And so the Twistringer Malottes were in great demand - initially in northern Germany and the Ruhr area , and later also abroad as far as America and South Africa . At the peak in 1935, there were in the Delme City 24 Malotten factories and numerous home workers . Half a million pieces were produced in the city every day.
