The Museum of Straw Processing in Twistringen ( Diepholz district , Lower Saxony ) is a privately owned regional museum (sponsoring association). Since 1996 it has been both a regional and a special museum for straw processing and therefore unique in Germany. The history and development of the straw industry from its beginnings to the present is documented.

In 1992 the "Förderverein Museum der Strohverarbeitung Twistringen eV" was founded. Then the museum was built up bit by bit: acquisition and expansion of a barn, acquisition of machines, tools and accessories for straw processing, development of a museum concept.

In a former barn, historical machines, devices, work accessories and other testimonies from the former straw processing companies of Twistringen are on display on 850 m² of exhibition space. A reconstructed home workplace can also be seen. Guests can be entertained in the museum hall.

300 years of straw processing in Twistringen are documented. The structural change that has occurred especially since the 1960s becomes clear. The main focus of the exhibition is the - especially historical - production of hats , drinking straws , woven straw , malottes (sheathing for bottles), docks and mats made of straw. Social aspects ( home and child labor ) are also discussed.

In addition, the Straw Museum offers special events throughout the year. Since 2007 fossils from the area have been exhibited in the special exhibition "fossilia twistringensia" .

Around 40 voluntary helpers - including the voluntary museum director - take care of the further expansion of the museum and of looking after and entertaining visitors.
