Ross front shield (basic form, heraldic pattern)

The horse's front shield is a special form of shield in heraldry .

use

The horse front shield occurs only in Italian heraldry . This shield shape has been known since the 15th century, at the turn of the Gothic and early Renaissance periods . The shape of the shield should be based on the forehead or head protection of a splendid armor for horses . This often had a forehead spike in the middle next to the eye holes, but this was omitted in heraldry. The decoration with coats of arms on the real armor (engraving or punching) can be assumed to be the origin of the heraldry.

However, the heraldic form is not uniform. Shields are known as cartouches with scrollwork while maintaining the basic shape with different contours, even with a rolled shield edge.
