Allmovie

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Allmovie ( spelling : AllMovie , formerly All Movie Guide ) is a film database founded in 1994 . It was developed by the American US company All Media Guide (AMG) launched, they also from its headquarters in Ann Arbor ( Michigan ) from a business. In 2011, the offer was taken over by the US company Rovi Corporation (rovi).

The commercial database was created as a counterpart to the All Music Guide, which has existed since 1991 . The service was initially only available via Gopher , but the website of the same name has existed since 1995. In 1995, 1996 and 1997 an electronic edition of the All Movie Guide was published as the "Corel All-Movie Guide" by the New York company Corel Corporation . The English-language database, like the better-known Internet Movie Database (IMDb), offered information on filmmakers and films of all genres since the beginning of cinematography at the end of the 19th century . In addition to biographies, synopsis and film reviews, the All Movie Guide also provided information on TV series , production backgrounds and current cinema events, had a blog and contained essays on various film genres and trends. The licensed content was compiled by paid editors (over 900 critics worldwide, many of them freelance) and reused by thousands of retailers, websites, etc., including the Internet mail order company amazon.com or the film website of the New York Times .

Each film introduced was subjected to a rating system. This was based on various factors, including the contemporary reception (criticism, awards, economic success in the target group), its quality in comparison to other productions of the same genre or the reputation of the cast list. The editors gave the highest rating five stars and the lowest rating one star. Users were also able to submit suggestions for changes and additions, which were editorially reviewed and added after a period of up to six weeks.

In addition to Allmovie , rovi also operates the web platforms Allgame , which deals with computer and video games, and Allmusic (allmusic.com). (The addition powered by AMG appears for the last two .)
