action

A woman falls to her death off the cliff. At the same time, little Virginia has a vision of this suicide without realizing that this woman is her mother.

Years later, Virginia has grown up, works as an interior designer, and is married to the smart Italian Francesco Ducci. When she was renovating her husband's country house in Italy, she found the skeleton of a woman behind a crack in the wall. Virginia also had a vision of the death of this woman on her trip to Italy, but the victim in it was around 50 years old and not 25, as the forensic examinations that follow now reveal. Together with her friend, the handsome parapsychologist Luca Fattori, Virginia tries to find out what these visions mean. When it emerges that the dead woman was an ex-girlfriend of Francesco, the result is that he is arrested as the main suspect.

Meanwhile, Virginia and Luca are looking for evidence of Francesco's innocence. Francesco's sister Gloria gives Virginia a very special watch that plays a melody every hour on the hour. Luca discovers a magazine that deals with the death of the unknown and believes Virginia's visions all the more. When he does further research, he comes across the wealthy painting collector Emilio Rospini and discovers that there are many indications of him as a murderer. His further investigations then reveal that Francesco and Emilio killed a woman many years ago while stealing a painting.

When Francesco discovers a treacherous letter on Virginia's chest of drawers, he believes he has been convicted by his wife and kills her. As Virginia dies, she realizes that she foresaw her own death. In the end, Luca has his dead friend's watch in her hand, which is now playing the melody.

criticism

Christian Ade from Filmtipps.at spoke of the fact that the film had become a masterpiece of its genre, [...] the climax "was even increased with the murderously exciting finale, with which the film truly earned the title of 'Suspence-Kino'" . […] In his conclusion, Ade wrote, among other things: “This Giallo here is not only the fillet among Fulci's killer puzzles, but in my opinion even belongs to the crème de la crème of the entire genre. Because The Psychic is nothing less than a terrific psychological thrill! "

In Nightmare horror movies could be read: "Very intelligent Giallo by Lucio Fulci. Much better than Don't Torture a Duckling and about as mysterious as Lizard in a Women's Skin . The story develops very slowly but always in an interesting and clever way. The music is terrific […]. The actors can convince ... [...]. "

Gameware.at said that with the Giallo thriller the Italian cult director Lucio Fulci created an "impressive goosebumps crime thriller" which, with its unique visual dramaturgy and great soundtrack, is one of his best films ".

In Traumathek , too , the film music of Fulci's “loyal comrade Fabio Frizzi” was highlighted and referred to as “one of his best film music”, which contributed to the fact that this film could be called Fulcis “perhaps his best”. It was also read: "Without the hearty Gore deposits that characterize his later works, but also without their hopeless confusion, Fulci created a consistently atmospheric horror film here."
