history

The Palazzo Salimbeni was built as a fortress (Rocca) by the then powerful Senese family of the Salimbeni in the 12th century. In the 13th century, after two popular uprisings initiated by the Salimbeni (1264 and 1268), the Rocca was destroyed, but was rebuilt immediately afterwards by the Salimbeni. Due to several attempts to seize power in the city and their Guelfean convictions, the family was expelled from the city in 1419 and their goods, including the Palazzo Salimbeni, were confiscated by the city or the Republic of Siena.

The city council first installed the table for salt and grain here. When the Monte dei Paschi bank was founded in 1472 (still known as Monte Pio), rooms were also assigned to it in the palazzo.

In 1866 the Palazzo Salimbeni was completely acquired for 60,743 Lire by Monte dei Paschi, who had the building restored by the architect Giuseppe Partini from 1883 to 1887 .

The facade on the Piazza Salimbeni was changed as early as 1871 and from 1877 to 1879, and the entrance area was enlarged. Further renovation measures were decided in 1959 and carried out from 1963 to 1972 by Pierluigi Spadolini (born April 15, 1922 in Florence ; † June 8, 2000 ibid.). The so-called Intervento di Spadolini included the condition of a restoration while preserving the original structures as much as possible. The only renovations resulted from the removal of the Cortile della Dogana , the wooden staircase known today as Scala Spadolini , and the transformation of the former church of San Donato inside into a meeting room.

Archivio storico

The historical archive contains important documents from Senese history, including the so-called Contratto Sansedoni from 1340, which shows the floor plan of the Palazzo Sansedoni on the Piazza del Campo on parchment . Today the Fondazione Monte dei Paschi is located in the building .

The founding deed of the bank dated February 1472 (Delibera del Comune di Siena istitutiva del Monte Pio) and the statutes of March 4, 1472 are also preserved. Other historical documents are the lists of debtors from 1545, the bank's balance sheets from 1570 and payment orders to artists for example for the Pietà by Lorenzo Rustici 1572 (Salone della Rocca, 310 cm × 284 cm, inv. 381682). The death sentence of Armenio Melari from 1629 for embezzlement is here in its original form (Melari was the bank's treasurer (Camarlengo) from 1602 to 1622 and fled with 40,000 Scudi ).

The archive also documents the bank's (money) support for the Italian Wars of Independence (1860) and archived letters from Garibaldi (1875). Among the documents is a credit approval to Luigi Pirandello from 1928.

Galleria Peruzziana

The gallery was started in the 19th century with frescoes by Gaetano Brunacci in 1902 and completed by Carlo Bovini and Vittorio Zani in 1908. It is divided into eight sections.

The frescoes depict personalities from Siena, including bank directors and their wives, as well as high personalities, but also whores and madmen, whom Brunacci is said to have preferably integrated into the pictures and placed near director's wives, which also led to his replacement by Bovini and Zani should.
