Life

Sarrocchi was born on January 5, 1824 to Antonio Sarrocchi and Rosa Mancini and grew up in Siena. His birthplace is in today's Via Tito Sarrocchi 3 in the third part of the city Terzo di Città in the Contrada Tartuca (tortoise). At the age of fifteen he moved to Florence to study under Lorenzo Bartolini at the Accademia di belle arti di Firenze . He then learned and worked in the workshop of Giovanni Dupré , who was also from Siena . He himself taught his work of art to Cesare Maccari and Giuseppe Cassioli , the designer of the medal for the Summer Olympics . In 1855 he returned to Siena from Florence. One of his most famous works is the central fountain in the Piazza del Campo in Siena, called Fonte Gaia . From 1858 to 1868, Sarrocchi replaced the heavily damaged panels by Jacopo della Quercia . The fountain was moved 9.60 meters to the west and 1.60 meters to the south so that it now appears in the center of the piazza in front of the Palazzo Casino dei Nobili . The old figures of Jacopo della Quercia are now in the room called Fienile in the Museum of Santa Maria della Scala , where, in addition to the original figures , the plaster casts for the design of the copies of Sarrocchi are exhibited. Also in Santa Maria della Scala, in the Sala di San Giuseppe (Gipsoteca), there have been around two hundred plaster sculptures by the artist since 1999 , which were made after the sculptor's return from Florence to Siena in 1855. Sarrocchi made them available to the city of Siena in 1894 on the advice of his friend Giuseppe Partini.

On May 22, 1861, he married Ernesta Gani, who died on September 8 of the following year in a miscarriage. His second marriage took place on September 29, 1867 with Emma Pallini von Grosseto , with whom he fathered three children (Gino, * 1870; Adele, (1872–1937, later married the son of Giuseppe Partini ); Giuditta, * September 18, 1874 ). From 1873 he worked for the Italian government in the Giunta Superiore di Belle Arti in the Ministero della Pubblica Istruzione . He died on July 30, 1900 around 3:45 p.m. in his house in Piazza Pianigiani (today Piazza Matteotti). In his honor, Via Tito Sarrocchi in Siena was named after him. As early as 1901, a bust depicting him by the sculptor Arnoldo Prunai was exhibited in the Sala del Risorgimento in the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena. It has been dedicated by Vittorio Bandini from the Istituto Pendola:

A Tito Sarrocchi Maestro del bello stile nella scultura sull'ali della fede salito all'eccellenza dell'arte vanto e decoro di Siena, erede e custode gelosa dei suoi ammiratissimi studi i reggitori del municipio L'Anno MDCCCCI decretarono concordi questa memoria
