Life

He was born on May 5, 1842 as Giuseppe Domenico Partini in Siena as the son of Giovanbattista Partini (1815–1876) and Bonizella Rossi (1804–1874) in Siena in Via Salicotto and was a member of the Contrada Torre (tower). Partini received his training in Siena as a bricklayer's apprentice to an uncle. He then studied at the Istituto di Belle Arti from 1857 to 1861 with Lorenzo Doveri (born August 10, 1799 in Pisa , † October 6, 1866 in Siena) and Giulio Rossi. Later became the lecturer in the same place. He set up his first independent work in 1861 at the age of nineteen in Monteroni d'Arbia , when he designed and realized the Cappella della Villa Pieri Nerli a Quinciano . After the death of his teacher Doveri, he followed him to the post of master builder of the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta ( Siena Cathedral ). On August 31, 1867, Giuseppe Partini married Clementina Cresti (* 1847) in Buonconvento . He ran for the election to the Council of Siena on July 26, 1868, but was not elected. Shortly afterwards, on August 16, his only child Luigi (Luigi Enrico Bartolomeo Maria) was born, who later became an engineer and on October 15, 1893, Adele Sarrocchi, the daughter of Tito Sarrocchi (1872-1937), married, with whom he had no children. Luigi himself died on July 11, 1930 in Monte Argentario . Giuseppe Partini's wife, Clementina, was killed in a house fire on June 26, 1873. In 1879 he became honorary architect of the Accademia di Belle Arti Firenze in Florence . In 1882 he came to an office in the Consiglio Comunale in his second election in Siena . He died on November 14, 1895 in his house Villa delle Selve (Villa Selva) and was buried in his wife's grave in the Camposanto della Misericordia di Siena cemetery, the cemetery that he himself helped to create.

His style is often referred to as purismo or purismo senese (Senese purism ) and falso storico (fake historical style) or pseudo gotico (fake Gothic , also Gothic Revival ). Criticism of his approach to restorations was named semper troppo radicalmente (always too radical).

His main works include the buildings he designed for the Tommaso Pendola and Santa Teresa Institutes as well as some chapels in the Camposanto della Misericordia di Siena cemetery in Siena. The restoration of several important monuments in Siena, where he worked on two of the four basilicas (San Francesco and Dei Servi), the Cathedral of Siena, historical palazzi (Palazzo del Rettorato, Palazzo Franci, Palazzo Marsili, University) and at the Buildings around the Piazza Salimbeni (today the seat of the Bank Monte dei Paschi di Siena ) and on the piazza itself. In the province of Siena he was called to work as a restorer of several important sacred monuments. He worked in Asciano at the monastery of Monte Oliveto Maggiore and at the Collegiata di Sant'Agata , in Montalcino at the Abbey of Sant'Antimo and in San Gimignano at the cathedral, the Spedale Santa Fina, the city walls and the Palazzo Comunale. Far from his hometown, he was called to Acquapendente ( Lazio region , Torre Alfina), Chiavari ( Liguria region , Palazzo di Giustizia) and Zoagli (Liguria region, Cappella Gentilezza della Famiglia Canevaro). With his friend Tito Sarrocchi worked on the Piazza del Campo (re-creation of the Fonte Gaia) and on the Monumento des Sallustio Bandini in Siena.
