San Niccolò del Carmine

San Niccolò del Carmine , also known as San Niccolò al Carmine and Santa Maria al / del Carmine , is a church with a convent in the historic city center of Siena , which is dedicated to Nicholas of Myra .

The church is located inside the city walls at 44 Via Pian dei Mantellini . The Carmelite Order gives its name to the street, which is referred to as the level of the coat wearers or the coats . The church and its buildings are located in the third third of the city, Terzo di Città, in the Contrada Pantera (Panther), of which it is the oratory . In addition to the church and the convent, the building complex also includes a cloister , a sacristy and the Capella del Sacramento .

history

The building complex was built in the 14th century by the congregation built the Carmelites and after the cleavage of the Discalced Carmelites out. At the beginning of the 16th century, Baldassare Peruzzi redesigned the church and its buildings . The facade is a facciata a capanna , a gable facade, with a rose window above the main gate. The cloister is also attributed to Il Tozzo. The church belongs to the Archdiocese of Siena-Colle di Val d'Elsa-Montalcino . The building was used as a barracks until 1960 , today it houses the study office and the Presidium of the Scienze Matematiche, Fisiche e Naturali (Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) of the University of Siena .
