Lorenzo Bartolini (born January 7, 1777 in Vaiano (district Savignano), Tuscany , † January 20, 1850 in Florence ) was an Italian sculptor.

Life

Bartolini comes from a simple family of craftsmen. As a child he came to Florence in one of the factories that produced handicrafts in series from alabaster (plaster). Bartolini later moved to Volterra , where he also worked as an alabastrajo . When he was 20 he went to Paris to study art. During this time he earned his living making knick-knacks, similar to the one from his factory days.

There in Paris he soon made friends with Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres and through his mediation came to the Académie des Beaux-Arts . When Bartolini won a second prize in an academic competition with his relief Kleobis and Biton , Dominique Denon noticed him. Denon, the general inspector of all Paris museums, recommended him to others and as a result Bartolini got some very lucrative government contracts.

Napoléon Bonaparte sent him to Carrara in 1808 to found a school of sculpture . Until his employer Napoleon had to abdicate in 1814, he was entrusted with the management of this school. When angry citizens from Carrara chased Bartolini out of the city, he went back to Paris and accompanied his emperor to Elba .

In June 1815, after the Battle of Waterloo , Bartolini went back to Italy and established himself as a freelance artist in Florence. There he was appointed lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1839 as the successor to Paolo Ricci . In 1845 Bartolini created the grave monument for Hortense de Beauharnais in the Arenenberg castle chapel .

At the age of 73, Prof. Lorenzo Bartolini died on January 20, 1850 in Florence.

Bartolini's direction is determined by the academic manner of the Davidian school and in part also approaches Canova's view . In his long and influential teaching at the Florentine Academy, he made a special contribution by reintroducing work based on the living model. He is considered to be the founder of verismo in Italian sculpture. His most famous student was Vincenzo Vela .

In 1833, Bartolini was elected an honorary member ( Honorary NA ) of the National Academy of Design in New York .
