Francesco di Valdambrino (born about 1378 ; died 1435 in Siena ) was an Italian sculptor and carver of the school of Siena in the early Renaissance .

Life

His father was Domenico Valdambrino. The name Valdambrino can be traced back to the area of origin of the father, who came from the Ambratal . Francesco lived and worked in Siena and only from 1406 to 1408 in Lucca.

Major works

In 1401 he took part in the competition to design the second bronze door of the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Florence, which Ghiberti won.

He is particularly known for his wooden sculptures. The secured works include a Madonna and Child (1403) in the Church of Sant'Andrea in Palaia , a Saint Nicholas of Tolentino (1407) in Santa Maria Corteorlandini (now in the Museo Nazionale di Villa Guinigi) in Lucca and three busts of the city saints of Siena (1409) in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo in Siena and a enthroned Peter in the Museo Civico e Diocesano d'Arte Sacra in Montalcino from 1423. The figure of Saint Anthony Abbas from the destroyed church of Sant'Antonio in Fontebranda , which is now in the Basilica di San Domenico in Siena (fifth chapel of the transept) is convincingly attributed to the artist.

He helped Jacopo della Quercia design the Fonte Gaia fountain in the Piazza del Campo in Siena.
