action

In New York City, a mentally disturbed killer cruelly tortures his victims before killing them. The investigating police officer, Lieutenant Williams, initially has no clues, only the testimony of an elderly woman who claims that the alleged murderer had a screeching voice like Donald Duck . After the responsible forensic doctor discovered a connection between two murders, Williams sought the advice of the renowned psychologist Professor Davis, with his help to obtain a psychological profile of the insane serial offender.

The police are still puzzled until the sex offender strikes again, murdered a society lady and at the same time calls Williams with a cackling voice, who is staying with a younger prostitute, Kitty, at the same time. The investigator manages to record the mocking call, so that Davis can narrow down the group of perpetrators in question to a middle-aged, above-average intelligent man, who does not commit his deed while intoxicated, but rather calculating.

After another attempted murder of the young Fay Majors, who survived seriously injured, the police received important information about a man who followed her from the subway and who is said to have a mutilated right hand. The completely traumatized woman initially withheld from the police that she believed her friend, the physicist Peter Bunch, to be the perpetrator. Despite the first hot lead in the case and a nationwide manhunt, the unknown killer strikes again and kills the wealthy, drifty Jane Lodge in a hotel. After the recent, the fourth total murder, a testimony incriminates the drug addict Mickey Scellenda, whose trace, however, turns out to be a dead end in the further course of the plot.

After a second unsuccessful assassination attempt on Fay, which Peter seems to be able to thwart, Williams receives another call a few days later from the versatile and intelligent perpetrator, who manages to mislead the police despite the interception circuit and almost at the same time to cruelly kill Kitty torment. Since Scellenda is ruled out as the perpetrator - his body has since been found - Williams gropes in the dark and seeks advice from Professor Davis. The psychologist sees the serial killer in the vicinity of Fay, whom he has assessed as implausible since the first murder attack. It is decided to tail Fay.

For her part, Fay sees Peter as the potential perpetrator, but still needs solid evidence and a motive. In the cancer ward of a hospital she finds what she is looking for when she visits Peter's dying daughter Susy. There she happens to be an interested listener, as one of the nurses reads comic stories from Duckburg to little Susy while croaking loudly . Now she is sure of her cause: Peter is the murderer. After his daughter Susy got cancer, Peter's wife abandoned him and moved to Europe. From then on he takes revenge on women murdering in Manhattan in order to vent his misogyny. Williams and Davis come to the same conclusion.

At the end of the film there is a duel between Fay and Peter. The two investigators arrive at the last minute and Williams shoots Peter in emergency aid .

Reviews

"Just as confused as disgusting thriller that combines violence and sex with disgusting clarity."

“'THE NEW YORK RIPPER' is entertainment of the extremely tough kind, only suitable for gorehounds who do not mind the presentation of the one-sided story and just want to see a few rough effects. Clearly not Fulci's best film, but perhaps his most famous. "
