action

Late 16th century Italy: Francesco Cenci, head of one of the country's wealthiest families, is a tyrannical father and despot . The morbidly avaricious nobleman does not shy away from any meanness and prefers to surround himself with criminal followers. The nobleman, who was married in his second marriage, feels only contempt and hatred for his own family. One day he assaults a wards of the Colonna family , who are close to the Pope. Cenci then falls from grace. He fled from the captors of Clement VIII in the province, where Cardinal Lanciani came to see him.

The church, which is instituting a lawsuit against the monster, confiscates a large part of the Cenci property, which is said to have passed to a papal nephew, in a "strict educational measure"; at the same time he is banished from Rome for one summer. In addition, the convict learns that his attractive daughter Beatrice wants to escape domestic oppression in order to find the longed-for peace as a nun in a monastery. The angry count degenerates more and more into a rampant libertine and locks Beatrice in the dungeon. In the intoxication of alcohol he then mistreated them in order to hand them over to the church as “sinners”.

In the humiliated Beatrice the decision matures to kill the hated father and tormentor. Together with her secret lover Olimpo, her two brothers Giacomo and Bernardo, the stepmother and a hired assassin, she finally organizes the killing. The "Catalan" murders the sleeping victim in the presence of the others. The perpetrators then make the murder look like a fall. The authorities, however, become suspicious and send a police prefect. The latter first portrays the assassin, who, however, evades jurisdiction and is killed while trying to escape. All family members and Olimpo are still arrested. With this method the Vatican tries to wipe out the noble family in order to enrich themselves with the wealth of the Cencis.

Under the pressure of torture, the Olimpo authorities initially extorted a full confession, although he later revoked it in the face of Beatrice. In dying he tries in vain to relieve his beloved. As a result, the remaining suspects are charged and tortured. None of the participants can withstand the pressure of the brutal interrogation methods and ultimately they all confess to the act. Only Beatrice remains silent. In the end, Beatrice, Lucrezia and Giacomo are publicly executed, while the young Bernardo is sentenced to life in the galley.
