occupation

The Adventures of Cardinal Braun is a 1968 crime film based on the Father Brown stories by GK Chesterton . It is the third film with Heinz Rühmann as Brown, even if the film has nothing to do with the previous Pater Brown film adaptations The Black Sheep and He Can't Refrain . It was shot in the summer of 1967. It had its world premiere on February 13, 1968 in the Wiener Filmbühne in Berlin .

action

In St. Peter's Basilica is Pietà stolen. In the meantime, Cardinal Braun has taken on the matter in the Vatican . Under his command, a wild chase through Rome and the surrounding area begins . Joe Ventura believes the Vatican will buy the Pietà to keep the matter a secret. But the matter comes to light. Cardinal Braun succeeds in stopping the departing boat of the Mafia.

Production and reception

The film was shot in Rome and the Vatican. Heinz Rühmann tried again to conquer the big screen with this film, but it failed. He then devoted himself to television, for the first time in The Death of the Salesman .

Reviews

The Protestant film observer did not have a good opinion of the work . He found that the film was far removed from Chesterton's literary model and offered almost nothing but slapstick, the palatability of which was significantly impaired by taste derailments. The Lexicon of International Films did not judge much better . It stated succinctly that the film was a "[f] laugh Heinz Rühmann crime comedy, with a faded-in parody of Papagallo and some embarrassments".
