Renato, a young flautist who claims to be Marcello's illegitimate son, joins the childless couple Luisa and Marcello Herrighe. After initial skepticism, the violinist and the antique dealer accept the new situation. Renato grows dear to them. But then suddenly other married couples appear, with whom Renato has crept in in a similar way and then fled. Luisa and Marcello help Renato to escape from police persecution.
