Erich Otremba (born November 11, 1910 in Frankfurt am Main ; † April 11, 1984 in Ahrensburg ) was a German economic geographer. Most recently he was a professor at the University of Cologne .

Life

Otremba studied from 1930 economics, geography and geology at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main , where he in 1937 with a theme of Agrargeographie Dr. rer. pole. received his doctorate. In 1942 he completed his habilitation at the University of Erlangen with a thesis on the urban geography of Nuremberg. In the following years he was a member of a group of geologists , geographers, hydrologists and vegetation experts (among others with Josef Schmithüsen ) under the name of " Forschungsstaffel für die Sonderverarbeitung des OKW " . This was compiled by Otto Schulz-Kampfhenkel in 1943 for the evaluation of aerial photographs with regard to the warfare of the Reichswehr .

Before the Second World War, Otremba was a research assistant in Erlangen. In 1947 he became a deputy chair for geography and finally in 1950 an adjunct professor. From 1951 he was a full professor of economic geography at the University of Hamburg , where he was dean in 1957/58 and 1960/61. From 1963 he was professor for economic and social geography at the University of Cologne, where he was dean from 1966/67. In 1977 he retired.

He dealt with agricultural and industrial geography, urban geography, spatial planning and regional planning. Some of his works were considered standard works in teaching and research at the time.

At the Geographentag in Cologne in 1961, he caused a scandal when, in contrast to Hans Bobek (who saw it as an established and successful discipline), he questioned the meaningfulness of a separate discipline, social geography.

In 1959 he received the Carl-Ritter-Medal of the Society for Geography , in 1977 the Robert-Gradmann-Medal and in 1970 the golden Martin Behaim plaque. In 1970 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Erlangen. He was a member of the Joachim Jungius Society , the Academy for Spatial Research and Regional Planning and the Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences .

From 1964 to 1969 he was chairman of the scientific advisory board of the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation.

He had been married since 1938 and had five children.
