Eugen Wirth

Eugen Wirth (born May 12, 1925 in Würzburg ; † May 15, 2012 in Erlangen ) was a German geographer . His main research area was the cultural geography of the Orient.

Life

Wirth studied from 1945 to 1952 at the universities in Erlangen, Göttingen, Freiburg im Breisgau and at the Sorbonne in Paris. He received his doctorate in sociology and philosophy at the University of Freiburg in 1952 and habilitated in geography in 1959 at the University of Hamburg under Erich Otremba . From 1964 to 1991 Wirth headed the Institute for Geography at the University of Erlangen . From 1980 to 1993 Wirth was chairman of the Franconian Geographical Society . He was also an expert reviewer for anthropogeography for the German Research Foundation . Wirth was a Protestant and since 1958 with Ingeborg, geb. Holland, married. They had four children together (two daughters, two sons).

Honors

Wirth was a member of the Academia Europaea in London and the German Archaeological Institute and the Austrian Academy of Sciences . In 1996 the Goethe University in Frankfurt awarded him an honorary doctorate.
