action
Bruno Baldi returns to his home village in Italy in 1950 after ten years spent as a soldier and prisoner of war in Russia . His brother was a resistance fighter against the fascists and was betrayed by a villager and then murdered. The villagers know the name of the traitor, but remain silent for fear of Bruno's revenge. He is avoided and only the girl seeks contact. Nella was Bruno's fiancée before the war. But she, too, is tormented by terrible remorse. During the war she had an affair with a German soldier and is the mother of one child from this relationship. In addition, her brother Pinin is the traitor Bruno is looking for. The burden of guilt becomes unbearable for the villagers. Finally, the carpenter Antonio decides to cleanse the village of debt. He pretends to be the wanted traitor to Bruno. Bruno then kills Antonio, who, lying dying, tells Bruno his innocence and intentions. Bruno now learns the real perpetrator, but after his own act against Antonio no longer feels the hatred against Pinin. Pinin stays alive and thus escapes revenge.
Reviews
“A hauntingly designed film on the subject of atonement and atoning death, which, in addition to many impressive scenes, also shows some posed and intellectual posturing with unclear thoughts about the repetition of Christ's atoning redeeming death. Still an extremely respectable work. "
