Gábor Pogány (born October 28, 1915 in Budapest , † October 30, 1999 in Rome ) was a Hungarian cameraman who made most of his work for Italian productions.

Life

Pogany studied architecture in his hometown Budapest and at the Holborn Art School in London. When his compatriot Alexander Korda met him in a London restaurant in 1934, he persuaded him to come to the film. In the following three years Pogany worked as a camera assistant on British Korda productions such as “ The Scarlet Seal”, “The World in a Hundred Years”, “Rembrandt” and “ Fire over England ”. In 1937 Gabor Pogany came to Rome and worked there for the next four years as a camera assistant and simple cameraman (" Stasera alle undici", "Sono stato io", "Il conte di Brechard", "La dama bianca", "L'argine", "Storms over Morreale", "Amicizia", "The Cavalier with the Mask", "Capitan Fracassa", "Beatrice Cenci", "The Corsair's Daughter " and " La maschera di Cesare Borgia ").

As head cameraman from 1941 onwards, Pogany photographed an abundance of mostly artistically poor, even if quite successful entertainment films at the box office. In 1960 he received the Nastro d'Argento for Europa di notte . His list of works includes over 120 productions.

Pogany was the father of the cameraman Cristiano Pogany (1947-1999).
