Raf Vallone ( Raffaele Vallone ; born February 17, 1916 in Tropea , Calabria , † October 31, 2002 in Rome ) was an Italian actor and football player.

Life

Raf Vallone comes from an aristocratic Calabrian family on his mother's side and was the son of a successful lawyer. After graduating from Liceo classico Cavour , he studied law and philosophy at the University of Turin and then joined his father's office. He also played professional football in Serie A at AC Turin , with which he won the Coppa Italia in 1935/36.

He played in his first film as early as 1942, but was not concerned with a possible film career. It was only when Giuseppe De Santis cast him in 1949 as the lover of Silvana Mangano in Bitter Rice that his career as a star of Italian cinema began. He became one of Italy's most popular actors, regularly starring alongside stars such as Sophia Loren , Gina Lollobrigida and Anna Magnani on stage, in film and on television.

In 1950 he played as a miner's guide in Pietro Germi's Il cammino della speranza for the first time at the side of his future wife Elena Varzi . The following year he played Garibaldi . Due to his French and English language skills, he was also seen in numerous international productions from 1951. In Germany in 1956 he played alongside Maria Schell in Horst Hächler's Love and Wolfgang Staudte's Rose Bernd . He produced in the early 1960s in Paris, Arthur Miller -Stück A View from the Bridge and also took over the lead role in the film adaptation of Sidney Lumet . In 1963, Vallone appeared in his first American film, Otto Preminger's Der Kardinal . He starred in at least 15 films in the United States. One of his roles was that of a Vatican cardinal in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather III (1990).

Vallone was married to actress Elena Varzi for 52 years until his death. Their children Eleonora and Saverio also tried their hand at actors.
