Dame Elizabeth Jane Campion DNZM (born April 30, 1954 in Wellington , New Zealand ) is a New Zealand film director who lives and works in Sydney .

Life

Campion's parents trained at London's Old Vic Theater . Her father Richard is a director and her mother Edith is an actress. The older sister Anna also works as a director. From 1973 to 1975 Jane Campion completed a degree in anthropology at Victoria University of Wellington with a Bachelor of Arts degree . In 1976 she studied in London. From 1976 to 1980 she studied art in Sydney with a focus on painting. From 1981 to 1984 she studied at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS), where she trained as a director.

In 1992 she married the radio producer Colin Englert. In 1993 their son Jasper was born, who died a few days after the birth. In 1994 their daughter Alice Englert , who works as an actress, was born. The marriage ended in divorce in 2001.

Her second short film Orange Peel - An Exercise in Discipline ( An Exercise in Discipline - Peel ) from 1982 brought her the first high award in 1986: the Palme d'Or for best short film at the Cannes International Film Festival . Her film Sweetie (1989) was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes International Film Festival in 1989 and won the Independent Spirit Award for Best International Film in 1991 . With An Angel at My Blackboard (1990) she filmed the autobiography of the New Zealand writer Janet Frame , who spent several years in psychiatric hospitals. The director achieved her greatest success with Das Piano , for which she received the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1993 , so far as the only woman to have received this honor. She was also nominated for an Oscar for best director and won the trophy for best screenplay. In 2009 she received an invitation to compete at the 62nd Cannes International Film Festival for the film Bright Star . The film is about the love affair between 23-year-old lyric poet John Keats and Fanny Brawne, who is five years his junior. She caused a sensation in 2013 with her television miniseries Top of the Lake . A second season followed in 2017 called China Girl . In 2014, Campion was appointed jury president for the Cannes Film Festival .

Campion has lived and worked in Sydney since the 1980s .

Her films play an important role in the novel Ten Days in February by Heike-Melba Fendel .
