action

season 1

The first season takes place in New Zealand .

The twelve-year-old Tui tries to kill herself in the ice-cold lake. It turns out that Tui, daughter of the local drug lord, is five months pregnant. The Sydney police officer Robin, who is visiting her terminally ill mother, is called in as a specialist in child abuse by the youth welfare office at the Southern Lakes Police. The girl says "NO ONE" as the father of the fetus with Robin. Al Parker, the local police chief, arranges for Tui to be brought back to her father Matt Mitcham and her two adult half-brothers. At the same time, the dangerous trio Bob Platt drowns. The real estate agent had sold the "Paradise" property to a women's group against Matt's stated will. The head of the group is the androgynous GJ, who gives life support to the disaffected women living in containers. After Tui has threatened her father with a rifle without consequences, she leaves her father's fortress-like house on a horse with her dog, rifle and ammunition and rides to the paradise property. Tui reveals her pregnancy to the hospitable women and stays overnight. The next day she disappeared without a trace, the dog is back with her father and the horse is found on the street without a rider.

Robin takes over the search in the surrounding mountains. The first suspicion falls on the Austrian Wolfgang Zanic, who lives secluded in the forest and already has a criminal record for pedophilia. Robin suspects that he is hiding Tui in his basement. In his house in the woods, Robin finds photos of children in traditional costumes, including Tui. When Robin wants to ask him about it, he threatens her with a gun and can only be reassured by Robin's former friend Johnno. Even in the women's camp in “Paradise”, Robin receives no evidence of Tui's disappearance, but meets Guru GJ, who means that she will bring the search for the girl to her knees.

Soon after, Wolfgang Zanic is found hanged on his forest property. His apparent suicide raises questions. Robin's colleague Al invites her to dinner and reveals her past, which Robin would have liked to suppress and which shows parallels to Tui's fate: Robin was raped by four drunk men at the age of 15, one of whom is still living locally.

season 2

After four years in New Zealand, Robin is back working as a detective in Sydney. The body of a young Asian woman is soon found on the beach; the autopsy reveals that she was pregnant but there was no relationship to the fetus, which raises the suspicion of surrogacy . In her free time, Robin contacts the adoptive parents of her daughter Mary, who is in a relationship with the much older Alex, a failed history doctoral student who lives above a brothel and is involved in the Thai prostitute business. Meanwhile, Robin and her colleague Miranda brings a hallucinating woman who is looking for her baby on the trail of a fertility clinic. It soon turns out that Mary's mysterious friend Alex belongs to the brothel where the missing China girl worked.

reception

season 1

“Top of the Lake tells in six to seven episodes (depending on the cut) of a criminal case and its investigation - and is still something of the craziest thing that is currently on television. The landscape through which Peter Jackson once had his hobbit wear the damned ring is rough, and the people fit in well. "

- Katharina Riehl : Süddeutsche Zeitung

season 2

"Jane Campion takes a feminist look at the world of Robin Griffin [...] and creates realistic female figures, beyond trite clichés."

Episodes

There are two versions of the first season: a seven hour episode version that was shown at the 2013 Sundance Festival and from March 18 to April 15, 2013 on the Sundance Channel. The episodes of this version have no titles, but are simply numbered (episodes 1–7). In Germany, on the other hand , the broadcaster Arte resorted to an edited version that was first broadcast by the British broadcaster BBC Two in July and August 2013 and consists of six one-hour episodes with their own titles. The following list contains the six-part version.
