SundanceTV , known as the Sundance Channel from 1996 to 2014 , is an American television station that is broadcast over cable. The station was founded in 1996 by actor and director Robert Redford in cooperation with Showtime Networks Inc. and NBCUniversal . The name of the station is derived from Redford's role in the film Two Bandits (Original title: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid ).

Initially founded mainly as a broadcaster for films, the company began to develop towards series under later leadership. In 2008, the station was acquired by Rainbow Media, which later renamed itself AMC Networks and, among other things, operates the TV station of the same name, AMC . The broadcast of the three-part Carlos - The Jackal in 2010, which was originally produced as a series, but was evaluated as a cinema film in countries like Germany in a shorter cut, is seen as the beginning of the focus on series . Later mainly rights to foreign series were acquired, but own series were also produced. In 2013, Rectify was the first self-produced series to be included in the program, which was originally developed for sister station AMC.

The renaming of Sundance Channel to SundanceTV took place on February 1, 2014, exactly 18 years after the broadcast began.
