The Returned (Original title: Les Revenants ) is a French television series by Canal + about revenants . The first season, consisting of eight episodes, was shot in 2012. The shooting for the second season took place from autumn 2014 to spring 2015. The second season aired on Canal + from September 28 to October 19, 2015. In 2014, the US cable broadcaster A&E commissioned a remake of the television series of the same name , which was discontinued after a season.

action

Mysterious events occur in a French mountain village. Deceased people suddenly reappear in the family circle. Camille is a young girl who died in a bus accident a few years ago. Suddenly she finds herself at the scene of the accident. With no memory of the accident, she makes her way home, where she causes a corresponding commotion. But Camille is not the only one who returns from the afterlife. Over time, more and more deceased return who have one thing in common: their death was not natural; they died in an accident, murder, or suicide.

In the second season, a dam burst over 35 years ago plays a role, the victims of which are now returning, but no longer find anyone waiting for them.

The series is a TV adaptation of the 2004 film Les Revenants (English title They Came Back ) directed by Robin Campillo . It was produced for Canal + and has been available on the Watchever video streaming portal since November 2013 . The first season was directed by Fabrice Gobert and Frédéric Mermoud . In the second season, Frédéric Goupil co-directed alongside Fabrice Gobert. The scripts were written by Fabien Adda , Emmanuel Carrère , Fabrice Gobert and Nicolas Peufaillit . The soundtrack for the series comes from the Scottish band Mogwai .

Episodes 1 to 5 were rated as FSK 16, the remaining episodes as FSK 12.

From May 28, 2014, The Returned was broadcast on the pay TV channel RTL Crime in the German-language dubbed version. From September 24, 2014, the free TV premiere took place on WDR , where the television series - as when it was first broadcast in France - was broadcast weekly in double episodes. The series has been broadcast at Einsfestival since September 30, 2014 . The second season of the series has been available online on Watchever since December 20, 2015 .

The film was shot in the Haute-Savoie department , especially in Annecy , but also in Seynod , Menthon-Saint-Bernard , Poisy , Cran-Gevrier , Sévrier , Annecy-le-Vieux , Veyrier-du-Lac and Semnoz . The dam that is often shown is the Tignes dam .

Spiegel Online writes: "This is how The Returned has become a deceptive, devious and wonderfully melancholy series that has started a worldwide triumphant advance." Zeit Online described the series as "a ghostly tale about grief and overcoming it". According to Focus Online , "it is the question of the reason for the sudden return, coupled with the dark aesthetics of the series that should send a chill down the spine of the viewer".

In 2013, the television series won an International Emmy Award for Best Drama Series.
