The Returned is an American television series on the broadcaster A&E about deceased people who return without knowing that they have died (so-called " revenants "). The series was commissioned by the US cable broadcaster in 2014. It is a remake of the French series of the same name and was newly adapted by Carlton Cuse for the American market. It has been broadcast on A&E in the United States since March 9, 2015 and on Netflix in Germany since March 10, 2015 .

Strange things are happening in the American town of Caldwell. People who died years ago suddenly reappear with their families and relatives and have no memory of what happened and how much time has passed since then. Young Camille died four years ago in a bus accident during a school trip and is returning to the house she lived in at the time. When her mother is alone in the house in the evening and hears a noise from the kitchen, she goes downstairs and is shocked to discover her deceased daughter who is about to make herself something to eat. Since Camille has had amnesia since the accident , she behaves in front of her mother as if nothing has happened. Her mother doesn't show anything at first either. Meanwhile, other former residents of the small town are returning from the afterlife.

At the end of April 2014, the cable broadcaster A&E gave the green light for the production of a ten-part first season. The decision was made based on the script for the first episode. It was written by producer Carlton Cuse , who, together with Raelle Tucker, also directs the series as executive producer . The companies FremantleMedia North America and A + E Studios are responsible for the production .

After ordering the series, the casting should also start quickly. On May 22, 2014, Mark Pellegrino was announced as the first actor. At the beginning of June 2014 the actors India Ennenga , Kevin Alejandro , Sophie Lowe , Mat Vairo and Jeremy Sisto followed . On June 9, 2014, the cast was expanded to include the actors Mary Elizabeth Winstead , Sandrine Holt and Agnes Bruckner . Michelle Forbes , Leah Gibson and Rhys Ward followed in mid-June 2014 .

In June 2015, A&E announced that due to lower audience numbers , a second season of The Returned would not be ordered.

The Winship family is shocked when their daughter Camille, who died four years ago in a bus accident, returns home unharmed. Meanwhile, Simon, who also died years ago, finds out that his fiancée Rowan is now with another man. 30 years after her death, Helen Goddard finds herself in the apartment of her now aged husband, who later desperately kills himself. Little Victor also returns to the small town many years after his death and finds shelter with Julie. Lucy is apparently fatally stabbed to death by a dark-clad man on her way home and left in a tunnel. In a flashback, we learn that Camille's sister, Lena, had faked an illness in order not to have to go to the school trip, on whose return Camille had a fatal accident. Shortly before the accident, Camille had a vision of her sister and her boyfriend. Angry, she tried to stop the bus to get off. The distracted bus driver noticed too late the Victor who was standing on the road, whom he avoided and as a result of which the bus deviated from the road and fell down the cliff.

Camille's parents and her twin sister Lena try to reintegrate her into the family after their return. As Rowan has started making preparations for Tommy's upcoming wedding, she believes she has visions of her late fiancé Simon again. In order to finally get rid of these visions, she says goodbye in a conversation with Simon because she does not know that he has returned from the dead. Meanwhile, the police recognize from Lucy's stitches in the stomach that there are parallels to an older case of a serial killer who simply disappeared seven years ago and was believed to be dead. Bartender Tony is considered suspicious and recognizes a familiar pattern in the stitches from photos of the victims. Julie becomes melancholy at the presence of Victor and undresses in the bathroom to bathe. Old but healed scars from the known knife wounds of the police photos come to light. This reveals that she was also a victim of the serial killer.

In order to be able to show herself in public, Camille pretends to be Lena's cousin Alice. Lena is worse off because a kind of cut forms on her back that is getting bigger and bigger. Meanwhile, Simon reveals to Peter that he has died but has returned like some others. Lena tells Rowan that she met Simon and that he is still alive, which makes Rowan doubt her visions and she now knows that other people can see him too. Tony discovers Adam, believed dead, in his family's old hut and doesn't know how to deal with it. Understanding that Rowan has started a new life, Simon decides to say goodbye to her. Rowan, however, shows him their daughter Chloe. Deputy Nikki Banks visits Julie to tell her about the assassination attempt on Lucy, which is similar to the one on Julie seven years ago. Julie faces uncomfortable questions from her nosy neighbor who believes she has illegally adopted Victor. When Julie goes shopping to get food for Victor, he knocks on the neighbor's door.

After the death of the curious neighbor, Julie is persuaded by Nikki to leave Victor in Peter's care, who runs a kind of shelter for the homeless and needy. Victor soon realizes through the confrontation with Peter that he is one of the men who broke into his house 29 years ago and Peter's friend shot his mother and him. From the office, Tommy uses a surveillance system in his house to watch Rowan and Simon get closer. Rowan has a painful experience when Chloe spots a security camera in her room. This leads to doubts about Tommy's breach of trust. Lena goes to the hospital because of her widening wound on her back to have her examined and treated. Some time later, she remembers her dead sister in the morgue after the bus accident, whose body had the same wound. Rowan finally introduces Simon to his daughter Chloe, who knows her father is dead and thinks he's an angel and that's why he's come back.

A flashback shows how Tony looked for his brother Adam seven years ago and watched him in a tunnel as he sucked blood from her wound after the attack on Julie and seemed to feed on it. Tony knocked Adam down and disappeared with him, but left behind the badly injured Julie. Tony brought Adam home and buried him in the nearby forest. Adam woke up and begged him not to do it, but Tony hit him on the head with the shovel and filled the hole up. In the present, Tony confesses to his brother that he once killed him and buried him in the woods. Simon would like to leave town with Rowan and Chloe and start a new life elsewhere. Meanwhile Rowan forgives Tommy and chooses him. Victor leaves Peter's place after realizing who killed him and his mother almost 30 years ago. After seeing dead deer floating in the river, Helen goes into town and meets Victor. She calls him by his real name Henry and tells him that she died when the dam broke and flooded part of the city. The dead deer are discovered and recovered by the local police. After the investigations, an expert comes to the conclusion that all deer have committed some kind of suicide. Lena leaves the hospital and goes to the bar, where she discovers Camille drinking with her friends. Lena is furious, reveals her secret that Alice is really Camille and is now trying to kill her. She shows everyone her wound on the back. However, Camille claims that Lena is taking excessive medication and is therefore confused. Horrified, Lena runs out of the bar into the forest, stumbles and passes out. Adam, who is just nearby, finds her lying on the forest floor.

Lena wakes up after she passed out in Adam's hut. He discovers the wound on her back and offers to treat it. Peter goes with Victor to the grave of his friend, with whom he broke into Victor's house 29 years ago and killed his mother and him. He asks Victor for forgiveness because it was not he who shot. Julie learns from Helen that she died in the flood 29 years ago and has returned just like Victor. Julie then suspects that she died in the attempted murder seven years ago and begins to question her existence. Camille asks Ben to come to her because she misses him. Ben visits her in her room that evening and Camille seduces him. She tells him that she is really Camille and not Lena's cousin Alice. Horrified, Ben runs away. Lucy has complications and needs to be resuscitated. However, she has cardiac arrest and dies. She is pronounced dead, only to come back to life a few minutes later. When Jack visits Lucy in the hospital, she tells him what happened and that she now hears voices that she just played to Jack before.

Camille tells her mother about Ben and that he now knows about her. Lena searches for Adam and discovers his dark secret. Ben tries to convince himself that Camille is really dead and goes to the cemetery with a few friends to open her grave, but is caught and interrogated by Tommy. Simon visits his daughter Chloe in the park and asks her to tell Rowan that he will pick them both up that evening. Rowan decides to break away from Simon for good. Since Tommy now knows about Camille because Ben has not found a body in her grave, he is now looking for her and asks Claire to send her to him. Because they can no longer keep the secret about Camille, Peter and Claire invite the self-help group to the Winship House, where they show Camille to the other parents, who also lost their children in the bus accident. At Peter's request, Camille tries to comfort the other parents by lying to them. Tony tells Adam that Lena now knows about him. Adam then lets Lena go. When Simon wants to pick up Rowan and Chloe that evening, an argument breaks out and Tommy shoots Simon.

A flashback reveals that Claire and Peter had an affair five years ago. After Adam let Lena go, she returns home. Simon's body is taken from Tommy and Rowan's house to the morgue. Nikki discovers a crime scene photo in a 1986 double homicide file showing the body of Henry (Victor). She talks about this with Julie and tells her that another woman came across Victor four years ago and took him in. It was the teacher who also died in the bus accident four years ago. In another flashback, we learn that the teacher abandoned the boy on a lonely country road three days before the bus accident. Julie still decides to take care of Victor. Lena tells her family that Tony locked her up. Jack drives up to him angrily and beats Tony up. Peter follows Jack and prevents the worst. Lena and Camille talk and make up. Tony is interrogated by Tommy and Nikki and confesses to the murders and assault on Lucy to protect his brother. Camille drove the parents, whom she gave consolation, to suicide by hanging themselves in their house. Julie goes to the police station with Victor to talk to Nikki and Tommy about Tony. It comes to disaster when Victor drives Tony insane and Tony shoots himself. Rowan tells her daughter Chloe that Simon is gone, but Chloe becomes hysterical and wants her father back. Meanwhile, Simon wakes up in the morgue.

29 years ago: Helen was in the psychiatric ward because she set the town hall on fire. When the dam broke, the tidal wave killed her. Julie asks Victor about Tony's death and whether he killed him. After his resurrection, Simon first goes to Peter and asks him for help. Peter gives him some money and the keys to his van and advises him to start over somewhere else. But Simon drives to Rowan and kidnaps Chloe, who initially goes with him, unsuspecting. Rowan notices Simon and follows him, but has an accident and loses sight of the two of them. Camille talks to Lena about her concern that all of her friends will now know about her. Nikki learns that Victor was staying with a woman back in 2002 and set her house on fire. Both are said to have died. Tommy finds out that the van that Simon used to kidnap Chloe belongs to Peter's center and confronts him with it. Helen finds out from a miner where the explosives are stored and then kills him to get the keys to the warehouse. Camille seeks advice from Peter because she doesn't know how to deal with the new situation. Lucy leaves the hospital and goes to Jack's bar to find out how they are doing. Meanwhile, Helen gets the explosives from the old mine store. Simon went to the lake with Chloe. After talking to his daughter, Simon calls Rowan to meet her at the church where they once wanted to get married. Nikki visits Julie and wants to warn her about Victor. At the same time, she has a hallucination from Julie, triggered by Victor, and falls down the stairs. Rowan arrives at the church where Simon and Chloe are waiting for her. Simon finally realizes that he has lost Rowan and Chloe, says goodbye to his daughter and disappears before Tommy, who was called by the priest, arrives. During a prayer for the children who died in the bus accident, Peter defends Camille and reveals to the parents present that he is just like Camille and that he died 29 years ago.

A flashback reveals that Peter was accidentally shot and killed by his friend Rich 29 years ago. Because of the confession at prayer, Peter is arrested by Tommy. Lucy hears voices again and talks to Jack about the whole town being in danger. Claire visits Peter at the station and confronts him with his past because she wants to know who he really is. Nikki survived the fall of the stairs and is in the hospital. Julie comes into conflict with Victor over his actions. Rowan and Tommy get married in the church where she once waited for Simon to marry him. Meanwhile, Helen meets Simon and takes him in the car. They have a flat tire and Simon discovers the explosives in the trunk of the car. Helen then knocks him out. Julie drives with Victor to the house where he lived 29 years ago and was shot to confront him with his past. She makes it clear to him that his mother will not come back and that she can no longer take care of him either. Then Victor leaves her and looks for another surrogate mother. Camille goes to the lake with Lena and a few friends. She realizes that she is no longer like the others and runs away. Ben finds Camille and she sleeps with him. Then Camille is horrified to discover that Ben is dead. Helen goes to the dam to blow it up, but the attempt fails. Lucy hears voices at the wedding reception and reveals to Rowan that someone is coming who is the father of her unborn child. Meanwhile, Simon wakes up after being unconscious and looks down at the city from the mountain down into the valley. He gets a vision of how the dam breaks and the entire city is flooded. Panicked, hoping to save Rowan, he runs back down the street towards town.
