Mary Elizabeth Winstead (born November 28, 1984 in Rocky Mount , North Carolina ) is an American actress . She became famous for films like Final Destination 3 , Black Christmas , Scott Pilgrim vs. the Rest of the World and Die Hard 4.0 .

Life

Mary Elizabeth Winstead was born on November 28, 1984 as the fifth and youngest child of Betty Lou and James Ronald Winstead in Rocky Mount , North Carolina . Her maternal grandfather was a cousin of actress Ava Gardner . When she was five years old, her family moved to Sandy , a suburb of Salt Lake City , Utah . As a young girl, Winstead attended the Peruvian Park Elementary as a gifted child and attended several advanced classes at this school. She studied dance in a summer program in Chicago organized by Joffrey Ballet , a dance company. She was also a member of the International Children's Choir . Her childhood dream was to have a career as a ballerina. Therefore she took part regularly in various ballet performances. As she got older, her size made her give up her passion for ballet. In an interview she said: “I noticed at the age of 13 that I was too big for ballet ... Your body accompanies you all your life and ballet is very exhausting for bones and muscles” ( English “I realized pretty early on that I was already too tall by the time I was 13 ... You know, your body has to stay that way for your entire life, and it's pretty hard on your muscles and your bones " ). For this reason, Winstead devoted himself to acting.

Career

Films 1997-2005

After Winstead had turned her back on ballet, she turned to acting. She made her first appearance on Broadway in the play Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat . After that, she received minor appearances in various television series; she starred in A Breath of Heaven and A Hint from Heaven . In 1999 she got a recurring role as "Jessica Bennett" in the NBC- produced soap opera Passions , but after a year she left the series. 2001 she starred in the CBS - drama series Wolf Lake , the daughter of Tim Matheson's character. This was followed by other roles in films like Monster Island , Checking Out and Sky High - This high school is taking off! .

Films 2006–2008

After appearing in Sky High , Winstead began collaborating with horror film directors James Wong and Glen Morgan , best known for producing the TV series The X-Files: The FBI's Scary Cases , with the film Final Destination 3 . She played one of the lead roles, "Wendy Christensen," opposite Ryan Merriman . The film was very successful commercially but received mixed reviews from critics.

In the same year she stood in front of the camera for the horror film Black Christmas , again directed by Morgan and Wong. In 2007 she was nominated for the Scream Awards in the Scream Queen category for her achievements . However, the film received nothing but bad reviews.

Also in 2006 she starred in the drama Bobby . The film shows fictional events at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles on the night of June 5, 1968 up to the assassination attempt on Bobby Kennedy. Winstead played the role of "Susan Taylor" on the side of Harry Belafonte , Shia LaBeouf , Ashton Kutcher , Lindsay Lohan and Demi Moore . The cast of the film has been nominated several times for various awards, as Best Ensemble Cast they won a Hollywood Film Award. The film received mixed reviews, mostly criticizing the quality of the script.

Winstead was cast in 2007 for the thriller Death Proof ; in the film by director Quentin Tarantino she played the role of "Lee". That year she beat all of her contestants, including Jessica Simpson , for a role in the fourth installment in the Die Hard franchise . In the film she plays "Lucy Gennero-McClane", the daughter of the protagonist "John McClane". Through Die Hard 4.0 , she gained worldwide fame.

In 2008 Winstead was seen in the dance film Make It Happen , which was released as a direct-to-DVD production for financial reasons . The film received mostly poor reviews, but Winstead's performance received particular praise. Critic Matthew Turner noted that her appearance made up for the poor quality of the film.

Films 2009 – today

In 2010, Winstead starred alongside Michael Cera in the comic book adaptation Scott Pilgrim against the rest of the world . Filming took place from March to August 2009 under the direction of director Edgar Wright . For her role, Winstead went into combat training for two months and performed most of the stunts for the film herself. Their performance was perceived positively in general and brought her in 2011 was nominated for a Teen Choice Award in the category Best Actress Action a.

In February 2010, Winstead received a role as a paleontologist in the horror and science fiction film The Thing . The film was released in US theaters on October 14, 2011. Critics praised her performance, Matthew Toomey of The Film Pie wrote: “[Winstead] stands out for her role as a paleontologist. She keeps her head clear while those around her panic. The film is a refreshing change from traditional horror films, in which the main characters make nonsensical decisions just to somehow prolong the story ”(“ [Winstead] stands out with her portrayal of a paleontologist. She keeps a cool, logical head whilst others around her start to panic. It's a refreshing change from your traditional horror film where the lead characters do moronic things as if to prolong the story ").

Winstead starred in the 2012 literary film adaptation of Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter . In the fantasy and horror film she played the role of "Mary Todd Lincoln". In the same year she appeared in James Ponsoldt's tragic comedy Smashed on the side of Aaron Paul .

In an interview Winstead expressed in 2008 their interest in a role in the film Die Hard - A good day to die (A Good Day to Die Hard) . At this point, however, it was not yet clear whether she would also be hired for the fifth part of the Die Hard series . In August 2012, it was announced that she could return to the set but would only have one cameo .

Other film and television roles followed. The film 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) and her leading role, for which she received the Saturn Award for Best Actress, received special attention from critics and viewers . Winstead also took on leading roles in the series BrainDead (2016) and Fargo (2017).

In 2017 she was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.

Private

In 2010 Winstead married the American filmmaker Riley Stearns . In May 2017, the two publicly announced their separation on Instagram. Since May 2017 she has been dating the Scottish actor Ewan McGregor , her role partner in the television series Fargo .

In August 2014, Winstead was one of the victims of the hacking attack on celebrity photos .
