Smashed is a 2012 published US tragicomedy of director James Ponsoldt . Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Aaron Paul played the leading roles . The film premiered on January 22, 2012 at the Sundance Film Festival 2012 , where the film won the US Dramatic Special Jury Prize for Excellence in Independent Film Producing . The film opened in US cinemas on October 12, 2012 and in German cinemas on May 9, 2013.

Kate and Charlie are a young married couple whose bond is based on a love of music, fun and especially drinking. When Kate's drinking addiction puts her in dangerous situations and she also risks her job as a teacher, she decides to join Alcoholics Anonymous to get dry. With the help of her friend and group mentor, Jenny, and the assistant principal of her school, the clumsy but benevolent Mr. Davies, Kate is making progress and is well on the way to getting her life back on track. However, Kate didn't expect that being sober would bring its own problems. Her new "dry" life brings to light the problematic relationship with her mother and confronts her with the lies she told her employer. Ultimately, she has to ask herself whether her relationship with Charlie is based on love or on the common search for an intoxicated change from adulthood.

Production and publication

On September 21, 2011, Super-Crispy Entertainment announced that Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Aaron Paul would be starring, with Octavia Spencer and Nick Offerman in the supporting roles. James Ponsoldt directed a screenplay he co-wrote with Susan Burke .

Filming was completed on October 22, 2011, and Smashed was added to the Sundance Film Festival program on November 30, 2011 .

On July 25, 2012, Variety.com reported that Smashed would also be shown at the Deauville American Film Festival , which ran from August 31 to September 9. Smashed was also screened at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival .

Smashed was recorded by Sony Pictures Classics on February 5, 2012 and shown in theaters on October 12, 2012.
