After a night of partying, Sutter is woken up in a strange front yard by the shy and inconspicuous Aimee, who is delivering the newspaper. Since Sutter has no idea where his car is, he drives with Aimee and helps her distribute the newspapers.

The two arrange to have dinner and talk. Sutter asks Aimee to help him with his geometry homework. He visits Aimee and invites her to a party by the lake. At the party, Sutter meets Cassidy, can also talk to her briefly, but is quickly abandoned by her.

Aimee says she got an acceptance from college in Philadelphia, but her mother is against her going. Sutter tries to convince Aimee that Aimee should prevail against her mother. Since Aimee thinks boys won't turn around to look at her, Sutter kisses her spontaneously.

When Sutter is invited to dinner with his sister, he spontaneously asks Aimee to accompany him. After dinner, the two get closer and closer, kiss and are from now on a couple. The two go to prom together.

Aimee succeeds in asserting herself against her mother and accepting the promise from the college in Philadelphia. Sutter basically doesn't know his father and his mother doesn't want to tell him where he is. Aimee encourages him to find out more about his father. He eventually gets his father's phone number from his older sister Holly. After a phone call, he and Aimee go to see his father. Although the visit has been arranged with his father, he looks surprised when Sutter is at the door.

Until now, Sutter always assumed that his mother had kicked his father out of the door. However, this tells him that he left on his own. Now the father pretends to only take a friend home briefly and then meet up with Sutter again. However, he does not come back and Sutter is very disappointed.

On the way back, Sutter and Aimee argue in the car, which almost leads to an accident. Sutter thinks he's bad for Aimee and throws her out of the car. Just as Aimee got out, another car hit her. Except for a broken arm, Aimee has no other injuries.

Sutter is afraid of growing up, he doesn't care about the time after high school, his academic performance is getting worse and worse. Still, he graduated. He also works as a salesman for a men's outfitter. Because business is no longer going so well, his boss Dan has to fire one of the salespeople. Since Sutter is popular with customers, he should stay. However, Dan asks him never to return to work drunk. Because Sutter cannot promise him this, he loses his job.

When Aimee drives to Philadelphia, her Sutter goes out of her way so as not to have to say goodbye to her. Sutter drowns in the mailbox and there is an argument between Sutter and his mother. Sutter then writes an application for college and drives to Aimee.
