Rob Simonsen

Rob Simonsen (born March 11, 1978 in St. Louis , Missouri ) is an American film and television composer .

life and career

Rob Simonsen was born in March 1978 in St. Louis , Missouri, USA. Since his grandmother was a singing teacher , he came to music early. He played the piano at a young age . His first musical experiences were influenced by film music, modern orchestral works, electronic music and jazz. He studied music at Southern Oregon University , the University of Oregon, and Portland State University .

He made his debut as a composer in 2003 with the independent film Westender . At the film premiere at the Seattle International Film Festival , he met the well-known composer Mychael Danna , who offered Simonsen to work with him. In the following years several collaborations with Danna followed, for example on the film drama Eve and the Fire Horse (2005), the romantic comedy Management and the love film (500) Days of Summer (both 2008). He also worked with him on the films Lonely Hearts Killers , Little Miss Sunshine , But It Happened At The Time ... (all three in 2006), Unmasked - Treason at the Highest Level , The Perfect Crime , Kings of the Waves (all three in 2007), The Cabinet of Doctor Parnassus (2009), The Art of Winning - Moneyball (2011) and Life of Pi: Shipwreck with Tiger (2012), in which Simonsen was either involved as the composer's assistant or was responsible for the additional music.

In 2009 Simonsen founded his own studio with which he composes music for independent films, as happened for All Beauty Must Die , Brooklyn Brothers Beat the Best , In Search of a Friend for the End of the World (together with Jonathan Sadoff ), There Is No Place Like Home - Get away from Ocean City , The Spectacular Now , Quite Far Back , The English Teacher and Wish I Was Here .

Simonsen also composed for television series , for example in 2008 for New Amsterdam , from 2009 to 2010 for Dollhouse and since 2010 for Blue Bloods - Crime Scene New York . In 2012 he was in charge of the music Hulu - Dramedyserie Battleground responsible. His music can also be heard in Apple TV spots and videos , for example in the advertisements for the iPhone 5 .

In 2018 he was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
