action

The 16-year-old rockhopper penguin Cody Maverick lives with his mother and brother in a penguin colony in the hometown of “Buenos Eisig” (originally “Shiverpool”) in Antarctica . It's been a few years since the surfing legend Zeke "Big Z" Topanga visited this place. "Big Z" gave little Cody a shell necklace, encouraging him to go his own way and never give up. Since then, “Big Z” has been his role model and Cody is a passionate surfer who dreams of becoming famous and respected as a surfer one day. Big Z, however, died during his last surfing competition in the “Bone Breakers”, an extremely dangerous part of the sea lined with rocks.

One day talent scout Mike Abromowitz visits the place in search of surfers who can take part in the surf competition in memory of the deceased “Big Z”. Because of his tenacity, Cody manages to get a seat. On the trip to the tropical island "Pin-Gu Eiland" (originally "Pen Gu Island"), the venue of the surf competition, Cody befriends the surfer rooster Chicken Joe, who also takes part in the competition. Arrived on the island, Cody meets the pretty lifeguard Lani, with whom he falls in love. Then he realizes that Tank Evans, the 9-time winner, against whom Big Z competed in his last fight, is ridiculing Big Z in the worst possible way. Furious, Cody challenges him and has an accident while surfing. As a result, he steps on a fire urchin. Lani then brings the injured Cody to her uncle “Freak” (in the original “Geek”), who lives secluded in the island's jungle. By chance, Cody finds out that “Freak” is the supposedly deceased surfer legend “Big Z”. He had only faked his death after a sporting defeat against Tank Evans in order not to have to face his fans as a loser. Cody wants to be trained for the competition from Big Z, but from him he learns above all that surfing is about more than just winning.

In addition to the favorite Tank Evans, Cody and Chicken Joe surprisingly reach the final of the competition. In the final run, Cody is hit hard by Tank Evans, but manages to keep his surfboard under control and even clear the way for Chicken Joe, who thereby succeeds in winning the competition. On the other hand, Cody is pushed into the bone breaker, in which “Big Z” once faked his death. Tank has an accident there and has to be rescued by Lani, but Cody has to leave her back in the sea.

There, however, Big Z comes to his aid, who can save Cody from the water with his incredible ability to assess waves. Once on the beach, Big Z announces that he is not dead. Cody is considered a hero on the beach, is hugged by Lani and celebrated by passers-by.

background

The pre-production began in 2002. The actual shooting started on 23 August 2004. The cost of production was around 85 million US dollars estimated. The film premiered on June 2, 2007 in Westwood, California . The film produced by Sony Pictures Animation and animated by Sony Pictures Imageworks was released in the USA on June 8, 2007 and in Germany on September 13, 2007. The film grossed around 149 million US dollars in cinemas around the world, including around 59 million US dollars in the United States. Almost 950,000 visitors were counted at the German box office. The film was available on DVD just 18 weeks after its cinema release .

The film was the second animation production in which Jeff Bridges was involved as a voice actor. The first production, The Last Unicorn , was already 25 years ago. The role of the uncle "Freak" (in the original "Geek") pays homage to the role of "Dude" from the movie The Big Lebowski, also played by Jeff Bridges .

The two directors Ash Brannon and Chris Buck contributed the dubbing voices of the film crew who made the documentary about Cody.

When Cody is asked at the beginning whether he has any other talents besides surfing, he asks the counter-question: "Something like singing and dancing?" This is a nod to another computer-animated feature film that also starred in penguins that was released just a year earlier: Happy Feet .

The name of the TV channel SPEN (Sports Penguin Entertainment Network) is a reference to the sports TV channel ESPN . Sal Masekela, who plays the SPEN broadcaster in the film, is also a spokesperson for ESPN.

At one point in the film, the character Meeper from the animated short film The Chubbchubbs! inserted in the background. The short film (original title: The Chubbchubbs! ) Is also on the DVD of Kings of the Waves . In addition, UFOs were barely visible in various places in the background - fun for the animators, who knew that director Ash Brannon is a UFO fan.

The animation team was sent to Malibu Beach to study the movement and behavior of surfers. The Brazilian surfer Renato Mendes , his Australian colleague Rory Nubbins and the Japanese Tatsuhi Kobayashi can be seen in the film during the competition. The original English title Surf's Up is a term from the surfer language and means something like "high surf " in the water or generally "good surfing conditions".

Reviews

Gernot Gricksch wrote in TV Digital 19 on September 7, 2007 that the volatile style of the film should confuse children, while adults would look in vain for something like a plot. Top tricks are shown, but overall not as good as in the penguin film Happy Feet .

The lexicon of the international film judges: “What begins in an original way as a“ surf documentary ”in form and content quickly flattens into the usual“ underdog makes it big ”story, which is animated by cool, but not very sympathetic characters. Even the sophisticated trick technology cannot save the film, which relies on the tried and tested and is only partially amusing for a comedy. "

Nominations and Awards

The film was nominated for numerous awards in 2008, but could only win two of the prizes - both Annie Awards .

The Saturn Awards brought the film a nomination in the “Best Animated Film” category.

At the ceremony of the Oscar were Ash Brannon and Chris Buck honored with a nomination for "Best Animated Feature Film of the Year". For many critics, this was a surprising nomination, since in addition to the two nominated films Ratatouille and Persepolis , a nomination for the extremely convincing film The Simpsons was expected at the box office .
