The Chubbchubbs! is an American computer animation short film directed by Eric Armstrong in 2002.

action

The Alien Meeper is a cleaner in the Alien Pub Ale-E-Inn. He would like to be the place of the singer in the bar Respect of Aretha Franklin karaokesingt and turns his mop into a microphone stand - during his imagination singing it hits the water bucket around and brings the technology to a standstill, so the singer finish her performance needs. Meeper is fired. Outside, he meets a dying alien who, shortly before he dies, warns him that the Chubbchubbs are on their way. In the distance, a huge cloud of dust is visible, which is getting closer. Several attempts to warn the pub patrons about the chubbchubbs fail, as Meeper accidentally knocks out the singer every time.

Only a strange alien warns the guests about the Chubbchubbs, who then run away in panic. Meeper also wants to flee, but sees a few small, fluffy chicks not far from his mopping bucket. He hurriedly hides them in his bucket, thereby losing time and finally standing face to face with the huge monsters that had announced themselves with the cloud of dust. In his distress, he sings them the title Want to be friends and a monster even joins in . During his dance, Meeper accidentally knocks over the bucket in which the chicks are hidden. The monsters panic because the chicks are the Chubbchubbs. Suddenly they show their teeth and attack the monsters, eat them with their armor and then return to Meeper, cooing.

A little later you can see Meeper in the pub. He sings Respect , his background singers are the Chubbchubbs. After the last crooked note, there was silence in the pub. Only when the Chubbchubbs demonstratively show their teeth does the audience start to clap eagerly.

The Chubbchubbs was the first fully computer-animated short film produced by Sony Pictures Imageworks .

The Chubbchubbs! was released in US cinemas on July 3, 2002. It first ran as a supporting film for Men in Black II and was shown as a supporting film for Stuart Little 2 on July 19, 2002 because of its success . In 2003 it was released individually and without additional material on DVD, despite its total length of just over five minutes.

The Chubbchubbs! contains numerous allusions to other science fiction and alien films, for example Darth Vader and Yoda can be seen arm wrestling ( The Empire Strikes Back ), an alien flees from the Chubbchubbs ( ET - The Extra Terrestrial ) and a dying one Alien, who warns meeper about the Chubbchubbs, looks like Jar Jar Binks ( Star Wars: Episode I ). In the German dubbed version you can also hear a female alien saying to her boyfriend: "And you stay solo too, Han".

The film features the tracks Why Can't We Be Friends by War , sung by Darryl Phinessee , Dorian Holley and Marlena Jeter , and Otis Reddings Respect , sung by Mortonette Jenkins .

A sequel to the film was released under the title The ChubbChubbs Save Xmas on August 8, 2007 as a supporting film for The Kindergarten Daddy 2: The Holiday Camp .

Awards

The Chubbchubbs! won the Oscar in the category “ Best Animated Short Film ” at the 2003 Academy Awards .

The film was nominated for a BAFTA Award in the category " Best Animated Short Film " in 2003 , but lost to Fish Never Sleep . At the 2003 Berlinale, the film was awarded the Slovenian entry (A) Torzija in the “Best Short Film” category .
