Arthur Santa Claus (original title Arthur Christmas ) is a 3D computer animation film directed by Sarah Smith from 2011 . The voice actors for the original English version of the film include James McAvoy , Hugh Laurie and Bill Nighy .

action

Arthur, the good-natured but clumsy younger son of Santa Claus, loves everything that has to do with Christmas . So he is the only one in his family in whom the magic of Christmas still unfolds its full effect. His older brother Steve, on the other hand, who will one day take the reins in hand, is a cool, calculating, clever businessman who has introduced the latest technology and military precision to the North Pole . Santa Claus still sees himself as the head, but is little more than a representative figurehead of the family business, because the company has long outgrown him. His 136-year-old father, Grandpa Santa Claus, is a grouchy old owl who hates the modern world and keeps grumbling to himself that Christmas was "a lot nicer when I was Santa Claus". He also does not speak too well of his grandson Steve, whom he mocks as "postman with spaceship".

In the midst of this chaotic family, it will soon be up to Arthur to prove himself a hero against all odds on Christmas Eve. An oversight has resulted in a child in this world not getting a Christmas present if no one intervenes. For Steve it's just a minor industrial accident. But Arthur sets out in the old reindeer sleigh with Grandpa Santa Claus and the elf Bryony to deliver this last present on time. The trio loses one of the reindeer in Toronto . A reindeer figure from an advertising sign should serve as a substitute, after all, the child is expecting a Christmas sleigh with eight reindeer. It continues according to the grandfather's old map and so instead of England you end up in Africa, where the team has to face a hungry pack of lions. With great difficulty they escape the pack, but lose the old card. Fortunately, Bryony took a navigation device with him and so they finally get to their destination. At least think so, because Arthur had only entered the place and not paid attention to the country. They leave more and more “footprints” and gradually cause chaos. After a brief period of doubt, Arthur is determined to save Christmas before dawn. However, Arthur's father is starting to worry that the chaotic grandfather in the scrap-ripe sled will not reach the destination in time and so he and Steve set off. At the end, all four Santa Clauses bring the missing gift together. When they see the child's joy about it, they are overwhelmed and Arthur is chosen as the successor to the still reigning Santa Claus.

Reviews

The magazine film-dienst , published by the Catholic Film Commission for Germany, writes that it is “irritating how the producers destroy the myth of Santa Claus with a lot of effort and verve in order to then confirm it” and that the children benefit from this “post-modern game the myth of Santa Claus ” . The bonds from the military sector and the conflicts in the family are beyond the children's realm of experience. Nevertheless, the film is technically perfect, has a sense of humor and is lively, it offers a rampant plot and a wealth of ideas, originality and lots of gags.

On the KinderFilmWelt page , the film received 4 out of 5 possible flaps, the children themselves rated it 4.27 out of 5 flaps. There it was said that the story was "pretty action-packed" for a Christmas film. That is "a bit of a shame", because it makes "the story of the lovable clumsy Arthur sometimes almost unimportant". But “many funny ideas in the pictures” would compensate for this.

Kino.de praised the film as "lovable CG animation film in 3-D as great fun for the whole family". It continued: “You couldn't wish for a more charming and funny Christmas film - thanks to elves and other adorable mythical creatures. X-Mas can come! "

At the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes , Arthur Santa Claus achieved an extremely high value with over 90% positive reviews.
