The Pirates! - Bunch of Weird Guys is an animated film based on the first book in the Pirates series ! by British author Gideon Defoe . It is a joint production by Aardman Animations and Sony Pictures Animation . Germany launched on March 29, 2012.

action

The motley crew of a pirate ship, under the leadership of an ambitious and unsuitable captain, tries to gain fame and booty so that the pirate captain wins the Pirate of the Year award on the pirate island of Blood Island. They hijack the Beagle from Charles Darwin , who discovers that Polly , the supposed parrot of the pirate crew, is actually a specimen of the dodo, which is considered extinct . The pirates take Darwin to his London home (run by his trained monkey Bobo) to introduce the dodo to the Royal Society . Darwin tries several times to steal the dodo out of love for the queen and to introduce him himself, but the pirate captain manages to present Polly himself hidden in his beard. The dodo is celebrated as a scientific sensation, but the pirates disguised as scientists are exposed by the pirate-hating Queen Victoria .

The pirate captain leaves the dodo to the queen without the knowledge of his crew and receives a pardon and a large gold treasure. He presents the treasure at the pirate competition, but cannot become pirate of the year there because his pardon is known. Thereupon the "king of the pirates" confiscated the entire gold treasure. When the crew learns that Polly has been sold, they leave their captain. While trying to get at least the pirate crew's beloved Dodo back, the pirate captain and Darwin discover that the Queen plans to eat him and other rare animals on their flagship at a secret meeting with other heads of state. They chase the ship in a zeppelin that they stole from the Royal Society. With the support of the pirate crew brought by Bobo, they manage to save the Dodo, sink the flagship and put the Queen to flight. Finally, the queen withdraws her pardon out of anger and so the pirate captain can now retreat to the island of Blood Island as a respected pirate who is loved by his crew.

Reviews

“Lovable animation fun with wonderfully weird characters. Compared to earlier works from the creative clay figure animation company Aardman, the film offers little in the way of innovation, but it is entertaining. "

“As in the 'Wallace and Gromit' films or in ' Chicken Run ', this Aardman production fascinates with exuberant attention to detail. With lovingly designed stop-motion technology, an adventure with plasticine figures is created here that is second to none. Even if the humor could have been more British, witty dialogues and sometimes breathtaking slapstick ensure the best family entertainment. "

"The Pirates! - An odd bunch doesn't quite match the high bar of Aardman's early work, but it still offers tons of outrageous fun that doesn't rely on popular pop culture jokes or fecal humor that are popular these days. One can only hope that it doesn’t stop at just one film, because four more books about the pirate captain and his diverse team are waiting to be made into a film. "
