action
Count Dracula is the single father of a daughter named Mavis, whom he wants to protect from "human scum", as he calls normal people. To this end, he has a castle built in Romania, a hotel that monsters check into every year who want to be quiet from people. Regular visitors are Dracula's friends, Frankenstein's monster Frank, Murray, the Mummy , the invisible Griffin and werewolf Wayne, who always bring their families with them.
When Mavis' 118th birthday is approaching, she wants nothing more than to explore the world. When her father allows her, she flies to a village in the valley. However, there she is driven away by villagers with pitchforks and burning torches, without realizing that everything was arranged by her father to further stir up her fear of the people.
Back at the castle, she confesses to her father that he was right, which seems to have solved all problems for him. However, much bigger things open up for him when suddenly a young man with an oversized backpack stands in the hotel lobby. The person named Jonathan (Johnny for short) is looking for adventure and initially thinks everything is a costume party. To cover up the failure of his elaborate security measures, Dracula disguises the human as Johnnystein , Frankenstein's allegedly long-lost cousin, whom he hired to organize Mavis' birthday party.
When Mavis meets Johnny, she is immediately delighted by him, which her father deeply displeases. Although Johnny causes enthusiasm in the hotel when he brings rock music and fun games in the swimming pool closer to the numerous guests, the traditional vampire prince tries to prevent this. He leads Johnny into a room with a picture of him and his wife Martha and tells us that she was killed by people back then and that he could only save Mavis. So Johnny now understands his aversion to people, but replies that people are no longer like they used to be, which makes Dracula thoughtful. After all, the vampire takes a liking to Johnny's actions, so nothing should stand in the way of a perfect party.
But suddenly the hotel chef Quasimodo appears , whose mouse Esmeralda recognized Johnny as a person from the start by his smell, and reveals the truth to the shocked guests. Dracula Mavis also has to confess his ruse with the village, which deeply disappoints them. Nevertheless, she confesses her affection to Johnny, but he is afraid of the count's revenge and accuses her of being a monster and that he hates monsters, which finally devastates her. The hotel guests, however, also feel deceived and want to leave without having achieved anything.
Dracula takes a look at the book he kept from his wife for Mavis' birthday. Mavis' mother writes to her daughter that she should hold onto what she loves. The count now understands how important Johnny is to his daughter. He can persuade his guests to stay and makes his way to the airport with Frankenstein, Murray, Griffin and Wayne to bring Johnny back. When they arrive in the village, they find that a festival is being celebrated here in honor of monsters and that people now love monsters. Encouraged by this realization, Dracula arrives at the airport, but the plane has already taken off. He flies behind in bat form, hypnotizes the pilot, speaks through him over the intercom and apologizes to Johnny, who accepts the apology. So Mavis' birthday party can now take place, and both celebrate with their friends.

criticism
The reviews were largely mediocre: while the direction and animation were mostly praised, the script was often displeased. At Rotten Tomatoes says: "The lively, silly tone of the film may appeal to children, for the elderly, he is more likely to be noisy and superficial." The IGN -Redakteur Geoff Chapman wrote, "It's a fun movie, full of quirky gags and loving figures. There are a few songs that seem like soundtrack marketing for kids, and the plot is pretty predictable, but the point is to enjoy the movie as an amusing journey with great characters. "
