action

The emoji Gene lives in Textopolis , a digital city in the smartphone of its user Alex . Despite being the son of two meh emojis , he has the ability to take on various facial expressions. That's because, unlike the other emojis, it was born without a filter. His parents Mary and Mel try to keep him away from work, but Gene insists. After Alex receives a message from his crush Addie , he decides to send back an emoji. When Gene realizes that he should be selected, he panics and makes a confused expression. The text center then gets into an uproar and Gene is asked into the office of Smiler , the system administrator of the text center. There it is classified as a malfunction and must therefore be deleted. Gene is pursued by bots but is eventually rescued by Hi-5 , a previously coveted emoji that has lost its fame due to lack of use. Hi-5 believes that Gene can be fixed with the help of a hacker .

Meanwhile, Smiler sends more bots on the way to find Gene when she learns that Alex is planning to have his smartphone repaired due to the incident. Gene and Hi-5 achieve piracy - app , where you get the hacker Emoji Jailbreak encounter. Their big dream is to reach the cloud service Dropbox so that they can live in the cloud . The trio is attacked by all the bots, but manages to escape into the video game Candy Crush Saga . Jailbreak believes that genes can be repaired in the cloud. The group then switches to the Just.Dance app. There it is revealed that Jailbreak was originally a Princess Emoji named Linda , who also fled from home due to constant prejudices. You are attacked again by bots. The damage caused leads Alex to delete the app. Gene and jailbreak escape, but the Hi-5 and its app end up in the trash .

Mel and Mary, meanwhile, start looking for their son and have a rather lethargic argument. When Mel admits that he too is malfunctioning and explains Gene's condition, they make up again. During a detour through the music app Spotify , Jailbreak admits that she accepts Gene and that he shouldn't be ashamed of his disruption. You reach the trash and rescue Hi-5, but are caught by an advanced bot shortly afterwards. They escape again and enter Dropbox where they run into a firewall . You decrypt the password and reach the cloud, where Gene is to be reprogrammed. Gene confesses his feelings for jailbreaking, but she still wants to stay in the cloud. In grief, Gene reverts to his apathy . The bot catches up with the trio and takes genes with it.

As Smiler prepares to delete Gene, Mel and Mary arrive. These are also threatened. The bot returns to the text center with its genes, where Jailbreak and Hi-5 manage to deactivate it. The incapacitated bot falls on Smiler and releases genes. Alex has since brought his smartphone in for repair and eventually decides to wipe the device. Desperate, Gene sends all messages to Addie, which leads Alex to stop the deletion and speak to Addie. Gene accepts himself for who he is and is celebrated by the other emoji.

In a post-credit scene , Smiler can be seen with broken teeth in the Loser Lounge with other forgotten emojis.

production

Director Tony Leondis came up with the concept for the film after receiving a message with emojis. To shape the story, he pondered the idea of the emojis exploring the real world. However, his producer advised against it and preferred a plot that revolves around the life of the emojis in a smartphone, which Leondis finally decided on.

In July 2015 it was announced that Sony Pictures Animation had obtained the rights to the film in lieu of other interested parties, Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures . This was officially announced at CinemaCon 2016. Since the rights to the release and success of Pixar's Everything is upside down coincided and, according to TJ Miller , the spokesman for the leading role, Emoji - The Film was the fastest-produced animation film in some reviews the accusation that the flick was a knockbuster .

When developing the main character, director Leondis was inspired by its spokesman TJ Miller. Jailbreak was originally intended to be spoken by Ilana Glazer , who was later replaced by Anna Faris .

reception

The film received consistently very bad to disastrous reviews. While dubbing and animation were mostly praised, the story and all the partly manipulative product placements were the target of universal criticism. At Rotten Tomatoes , 10% of 104 reviews were positive. Ironically, the site uses the -emoji ("?") sign as a consensus. At the IMDb , the film also achieved a very poor rating with 3.2 out of 10 stars and is in 41st place on the platform (as of July 2019) of the so-called "Bottom 100" - a list that users of the website rate the lowest on average Films - listed. At Metacritic , the film only scored 12 out of 100, based on 26 reviews.

"The bottom line is that it makes more sense to invest your time sending your colleague a shit-pile emoji than thinking about the message of the film."

- Markus Böhm, Spiegel Online

“The jokes are flat, the characters are stereotypes. The worst thing about 'Emoji - the film' is the shameless product placement that children shouldn't be expected to do with. "

- Kathleen Hilderbrand, Süddeutsche Zeitung

“With the exception of a few nice visual ideas, 'Emoji - The Film' is the epitome of humorless and soulless animation cinema. We know exactly which emoji we would give for it ... "

- Antje Wessels : film starts

With a budget of 50 million US dollars, the film grossed just under 179.5 million dollars worldwide and is therefore considered a commercial success.

At the 2018 Golden Raspberry Awards , Emoji - The Film received awards in four categories: for the worst screenplay , the worst screen couple , the worst director and also the main prize for the worst film , which is the first time in the history of the negative prize for an animated film in this Category was awarded.
