The pile of poo emoji ( ? ) is an emoji reminiscent of a rolled-up pile of feces , usually depicted with large cartoon eyes and a big, friendly smile. This emoji can be used to describe a situation, replace a swear word or criticize a chat partner's statement.

The emoji is in the unicode block Various pictographic symbols : U + 1F4A9 ? PILE OF POO (HTML 💩).

history

A smiling and steaming pile of poop first appeared on the J-Phone , released in 1997, as one of 90 emoji.

In 1998 or 1999, Japanese mobile operators NTT DoCoMo , au and SoftBank Mobile created their own variants of emoji. The first emoji was created by NTT DoCoMo employee Shigetaka Kurita.

In a project called Mojo, Google worked with au to create new emoji for Gmail with the aim of expanding its presence in Japan and Asia. The Gmail design consisted of a faceless pile of poop surrounded by animated flies. Takeshi Kishimoto, the Japanese product manager at Google, went straight to the Gmail manager and convinced him that the dump emoji was the "most useful" emoji. This was confirmed by a statistical analysis carried out by Google to determine which emoji were the most popular among Japanese users. According to Google software engineer Darick Tong, the dung-pile emoji was “way up” in terms of popularity. The design for the emoji was left to the Google Doodle artists Ryan Germick and Susie Sahim, who wanted to equip the existing emoji with a “Google twist”. They settled from the existing Emoji designs as well as the figure Poop Boy from Dr. Slump - manga by Akira Toriyama inspired and were limited to a size of 15 x 15 pixels and colors that are used only on the Google logo.

Google first supported emoji in Gmail in October 2008 and Apple added the shit emoji to the iPhone OS on November 21, 2008.

The dung pile was added to Unicode in Unicode 6.0 in 2010 and to Unicode's official emoji documentation in 2015.

In 2017, a dung-heap emoji version with "frown" was proposed to be included in a future Unicode version. After negative feedback from WG2 experts Michael Everson and Andrew West, the frowning poo emoji was removed from the list.

The emoji is also incorrectly interpreted as representing a chocolate ice cream. This misconception spread not only because of the visual similarity to a chocolate soft ice cream, but also because many people cannot believe that there is actually a poop emoji.
